This book was awesome. Tourmaline (aka Tori) was a kick butt take no crap kind of girl. She gave as good as she got. I loved her. She had an awesome personality and was super caring. Then there were the guardians. Absolutely loved them including Onyx. They were loyal to no end. The story was great, fast paced and full of drama, action and laughter. I am (im)patiently waiting for book 2! Overall, another great read from Quinn Arthurs.

This book is brilliant. I love Tori, she's not your usual heroine. Is she snarky? Sure. But she is so much more, including not human. She is fearless/fearful, courageous, and totally can't tolerate bullies. She has a murder to solve, magic to learn and a baby dragon to care for all while staying alive and adjusting to three Guardians. This book is so entertaining, there is great world building and characters and a wonderful plot. I was hanging on every page and Bam! It was the end of the book! So not cool! it says that the next book is coming soon but not when that actually is. Heavy frown! I'm waiting and not happily. Enjoy. 💙💛💚💜

Do you like stories about Fae, witches, elves, dragons, etc? If so, The Guardian is right up your alley. Tourmaline, Reed, Onyx and Terran make a great team along with River and Opal. There is a lit of world building as Tourmaline (Tori) had thought she was human and suddenly finds herself in a world where magic is very real. She needs to learn to protect herself and learn fast, because there are people trying to kill her for reasons she doesn't quite understand.

While this started out as a slow read for me, and I almost shelved the book, Guardian had an interesting base story and enough unexpected twists and turns to keep my interest. The men followed standard tropes: the nerd, the protector, the standoffish jerk, but there was some nice character development. A few areas that would have benefited from more depth, but overall, this was well-written (only a couple of obvious typos, but nothing distracting).

This book was an absolute roller coaster of all the feeling to have. Tori falls in to an amazing adventure after completing a spell on her mothers last breath and gains some amazing hunks out of no where sworn to protect her at all costs. This books is a must read from me!

Oh. Oh wow. That was just. Wow. Ummm...so I need more! Seriously though, I just about died laughing at parts and I am so in love with the guys. I realise this us more gushing than reviewing but I'm just kind of speechless. Read this book!

This is a high energy, never-stops-moving story that will pull you in from the start! Absolutely love the characters, especially the strong will and sarcasm of the MC, to which I completely relate. Quinn Arthurs' writing style is witty and has the ability to make you experience the story with the characters, not just reading words on a page. Really excited for the rest of this series!

I enjoyed the world building and going on the journey with the fmc. I loved her strength and snark,but she also had a huge heart. I can’t wait for more sexy times with her guardians once she opens her heart to them. Fun read.

Make sure you bring ALL of your friends, or an entire boy scout troop! I halved the recipe for lasagna, still was going to be big for the 2 of us, (whole recipe says feeds 12,) and even though we are "big boned" folks... we still ate it for DAYS! I think I could have fed half the campground with the full sized recipe!!!Impressed the neighbors though, who had a RV and were eating hot dogs and burgers. We tent, and had lasagna, stew, baked biscuits and cobbler...

I love this cookbook! Each recipe is clearly labeled as a dutch oven, camp stove, fire pit or grill recipe which is exactly what my son's Boy Scout Troop needs to plan their meals accordingly for each campout because they do not always have the use of a fire ring or can bring a camp stove with them. The recipes are ones that have been tested by other Scout's and have passed the test to be included in this book. We have not made a recipe in here they we have not liked.

I usually don't care for "outdoor" cookbooks, but this one is different. As a Scouter for many years, I have seen or cooked the standard fare. This book actually has different and good recipes that I haven't seen before. It also has many recipes for foil dinners, that I think would be fantastic for patrol cooking. Foil cooking is one of my favorites. It also has a great selection of dutch oven recipes,including entrees, dessert, and one pot meals. It also has a few ambitious meals that would be perfect for Scouts working on Cooking Merit badge. For a Scouter, I think this is a must have cookbook.

Wow! As my whole family are involved in Scouts this was a great book and has loads of different recipes to try out. I only bought this book last week & have tried several new recipes, which my kids loved (and they are fussy) & with a camp coming up next month, will be trying these out on the kids. The book is written in America and the ingredients are in pounds and ounces etc... but these are very easily converted to Australia and the ingredients are very easily modified to similar products. If there was an ingredient I wasn't sure of, I just googled it and found an Australian subsitute. Fantastic, this book will get soooo much use. :)

I have already made Buffalo Patrol Cobbler on page 251. It was wonderful!! If the only cobblers you have made are using a cake mix you are in for a treat. It will not look the same as a cobbler made with a cake mix.This cobbler uses corn muffin mixes. It definitely adds texture and a different flavor. It is delicious!! The recipes are categorized by breakfast, lunch, dinner, breads, snacks and desserts, and drinks. within the category they will have the method used grouped together. For instance all the dinner dutch oven recipes are grouped together. Each recipe has the servings and challenge level under the title. Then the story. Although not every recipe has that. It will give any home prep first. then the in camp prep. After that the required equipment is listed. then any tips these can be very helpful. At the side of the page is the ingredient list and any options. The introduction and the appendixes A-E are very helpful for the beginner and a good refresher for the more experienced. this is a great book. I can't wait to make another recipe. I got this for my personal use as well as for use by my AHG Troop. If you are also thinking about getting the Scout Dutch Oven Cookbook There are no repeat recipes that I can see.

This book is geared towards scouting although anyone who likes to camp would benefit from this book. It is easy to read and the recipes are clear and concise. The recipes range from easy to difficult and are clearly marked with the amount of time your scout will need for preparation. I love that it has symbols by every recipe letting you know if it is intended for a dutch oven, frying pan, pots, backpacking or over the fire. The recipes are geared towards good old fashion campsite cooking and is not intended for gourmet meals.

Great book... This book is put together very well, printed on good paper. It is easy to read, and contains a great number or recipes. I have found a fair number of dishes that seem to suit me. I would categorize them generally a comfort food for the outdoors.

I love it that this book tells you HOW to cook in your dutch oven. Many just give you recipes, but this one gives a lot of good insight on scaling recipes, how many coals to use, things to prep ahead at home, things to watch out for. Its a very good book for a beginner outdoor cook, and gives some good recipes and hints for a more experienced cook as well.

A little wordy at times. Makes sense, given the title. Im about 1/4 way through. Decided to take a break from it and read a novel or two. It seems to take for granted that the reader has a little bit of prior knowledge of all Jewish culture. Which I do not. It is a bit of work to get through at times. But, I do find some parts interesting. I bought it because I was interested in learning some of the Jewish words and phrases which I've run into in life and in the New York Times crossword puzzle.

I've not quite finished this book, so perhaps I am being unfair. Certainly, there is a possibility I will revise these remarks. However, right now I am saddened and disheartened that a work beginning with such promise - I imagined from the introduction and first chapter I would be listening in on a conversation between father and daughter - scintillating, intellectually rigorous, stuffed with literary ideas - each one of which would be its own adventure. Instead, after that marvelous first chapter I found myself swaddled in a thin disquisition on the roles of women in Hebrew text -forced into shape, the apology stretched as far as possible to cover the flaws in the subject, a great disappointment.I have no answer for these writers. I was hoping they would provide an answer for me. It seems there must be a better course than trying to puff up such comparatively meager material with air. The truth is the sages were not much interested in women, and the attention they get in in the Tanach is cursory at best. What texts there are, on the whole, don't dig deep, and some of our efforts to derive meaning for the twenty-first century are not rewarding. My own solution - admittedly not entirely satisfactory - is to regard these stories as primarily about human beings, with only tertiary consideration of gender - at least insofar as we attempt to apply the teaching. In terms of analysis and criticism I think it's best to simply tell the truth - this or that text dismisses the feminine perspective, and if we want to understand what is missing we have to supply it ourselves. I wish I had something more positive to say.

At first, I thought the book was great, attempting an intellectually honest look at Jewish scripture. But as I got deeper into the book the authors started showing clear anymosity towards Judaism, and their inability to be unbiased became really pronounced. The book is supposed to be about transmission of our heritage but the authors get fixated on the issue of women. Their analysis of women in Judaism makes absolutely no sense. They compare outspoken strong women of the tanach to the queit and subjuligated women of the Talmud. They completely missed the fact that the setting for talmudic discussion is in the Yeshiva, while the setting of most of the Tanach is on the street and in the house. Women did not hold rabbinic positions during times of tanach either. Whenever Talmud does bring down stories about women, they are congruent with the pattern of tanach, where the women are presented as strong, smart, vocal individuals.The authors never site the sources for the stories and ideas they quote from Jewish scripture. They twist the translation to suit their agenda, something that they accuse the sages of doing. As in case of'daat nashim kalos' does not reffer to intelligence, it rrffers to the fact that a woman can be convinced to change her mind easier. Daat is not chochno and not binah, for both of those the gemorah praises women.What really got me is the story of the wife's being footstools for their husbands when moshiach comes. I tried to find that story everywhere. I asked rabbi who knows all talked by heart where is this story, he looked for it, I asked different hassidic people if they ever heard of such a thing. I don't know where it's from, but it's not something from any classic scripture or commentary, or anything mainstream orthodox people ever heard of. Authors bring no source for it, creating an assumpy that it's some passage from a gemorah or medrash.Honestly, after I found out that the footstool story was not true, I didn't want to finish the book. There are real complaints we can bring up against the Talmud, and Jewish tradition, and we can have an open discussion about them. Writing about things that don't exist, and taking things out of context is not conducive to this.I feel real anymosity on this book towards Judaism, not based on rational, but based on personal issues.

As an atheist with some ties to my past, I like this book as it makes a tremendous amount of sense to me:it allows me more latitude and comfort in rejecting so much of what I grew up in and doing, and by making a choice to become a rabbi. Not that this is a sinecure. It still makes intellectual demands I am not ready to agree with completely. But the book has examples that ring true.

Because this book is by Amos and his daughter Fania (named after his mother) I connect so dearly to it. The two different energies that voice ancient story lines and words fascinates and ties together.

World War II spies, love triangles, and major secrets abound. Three old friends form the center of this book - Lady Pamela, who works at Bletchley Park which of course no one knows, Jeremy, the son of a Sir with black market connections and a flair for the dramatic, and Ben, the son of the vicar who works for MI5 because of a broken leg caused by Jeremy's flying. Secrets are the name of the game for everyone so who is lying is replaced by who is lying for national security and who is lying for nefarious reasons. There may be a plot afoot and Ben is working in a small way on that. Pamela is working on German codes. Jeremy escaped from a prison camp after being shot down. THey all end up in their hometown at the same time and with hidden motives and hidden hearts come to learn more than they bargained for.

4.5 starsThis is the best Kindle First book I have read. Rhys Bowen’s Her Royal Spyness series is so much fun to read, and I read the newest book in the series as soon as it comes out. Accordingly, I was so excited to learn she had written a stand-alone novel that takes place during World War 2 (which is one of my favorite eras). Bowen did not disappoint – In Farleigh Field was a delight from beginning to end. I hesitated slightly when I first opened the novel because she includes a list of all of the characters upfront. I have generally found that means there are too many characters for me to keep up with, but that was not the case at all for In Farleigh Field. The central plot of the novel involves the ancestral home of Lord Westerham, Farleigh Place, which is serving as headquarters for one of the British armed forces groups. Lord Westerham has five daughters, three of whom play large roles in the story, Pamela, Margot and Phoebe. Pamela works at Bletchly Park breaking German codes, Margot is in Paris working for the French Resistance, and Phoebe is at home (she’s only 12) and discovers the body of a soldier whose parachute failed as he tried to land near Farleigh Place. There are various subplots that develop with these and other characters as the story progresses and eventually a number of them tie together very effectively. The resolution of each plot line was very realistic and convincing.Bowen’s exhaustive research is evident, and the tidbits she includes really add to the storyline. I loved learning about the group of aristocrats that supported Hitler and created a group to try and make peace with Germany (she calls them the Ring in the novel; in actuality she explains in her Author’s Note that they were called the Link). The MI5 and Bletchly Park details were fascinating too. I highly recommend this novel and was so glad I got the chance to read it.

I read Princess Elizabeth's Spy last week; funny to think that I picked this one up next, with the theme so similar. It isn't of any deep literary value but it is a really good read when you, as I am, are feeling under the weather and fuzzy headed. Although I had a suspicion from the second chapter (and was ultimately proved right) as to what was going to happen, Bowen's writing is crisp and flows well so I kept reading every page wondering how she was going to connect all the dots.The story revolves around a stately home and three (well four but one is a ditz) aristocratic daughters who each in their own way become involved in World War 2 spy work. My mind compared them to the sisters in Downton Abbey but the book is original enough not to be any more of a copycat than others of that ilk. Still, anyone who enjoyed Downton Abbey will probably enjoy this one.There is danger and some allusions to sex but in the main the book relies more on suspense. If you are looking for a serious World War 2 spy novel, this is not it but I enjoyed it.

I picked this book as my February read from the Kindle First offer because I knew something of the author’s other work. This is a ‘stand alone’ novel, so anyone not yet familiar with Rhys Bowen will find it a good introduction to her style of writing.It is a quick, fun read that includes actual historical events, romance, mystery and humor. I’ve read a fair amount of WWII fiction of late; this was unique for two streams of narrative. One is the “fifth column” where anyone of any foreign birth or difference was immediately under suspicion. The other was the role of the aristocracy who began to lose privilege, property, power and an entire way of life during the war and their willingness to embrace fascism to hold on to that.The story is well told, although some characters (there is a dauntingly long cast of characters at the front of the book – best to ignore that and plunge in, in my opinion) are stereotypical and thinly drawn. It took a little bit to get started, but once it started rolling, I found I couldn’t put it down.I did sort of guess who the “bad guy” was, though not completely, but it did not diminish my enjoyment of this novel.I must say, this is the best “Kindle First” novel I’ve read in a long while. And the first one I’ve finished in the month I received it. I would recommend it. It has put Rhys Bowen’s novels higher up on my TBR list.

Knight used tools inherited from her father to design and build her inventions. As a child, she was always sketching one of her brainstorms for toys and kites for her brothers. She once designed a foot warmer for her mother. Although it was never patented, Knights design for a safer loom saved textile workers from injuries and death. Later as an adult, she fought in court and won the right to patent her most famous invention, a machine that would make paper bags. Matties story is told in a style that is not only easy to understand, but that is also a good read-aloud. The watercolor-and-ink illustrations capture the spirited inventor and support the text in style and design. Their sketchy quality works well with the pen-and-ink drawings of inventions at the bottom of the pages. While most of these are simulated, the actual drawings from the 1871 patent for the paper-bag machine are included. The text has some fictional dialogue that makes Mattie more real to young readers without compromising the facts. An authors note gives additional biographical information about this creative woman. This is not the best source for reports, but it will inspire interest in women and children as inventors. Its a good reminder that nonfiction isnt just for reports. K-Gr. 3. McCully took on a challenge in this picture-book biography of "The Lady Edison"--little-known, nineteenth-century inventor Margaret E. Knight. Knight created the machine that makes paper grocery sacks. Her invention isn't instantly attention-grabbing stuff for young people, but McCully draws children into Knight's life by emphasizing not only her engineering triumphs but also her resolute stance against the restrictive gender roles of her time. She begins with Knight's childhood, when the young "Mattie" sketched prolifically, built inventions, and proposed safety devices for the New Hampshire textile mills where her family worked. As an adult, Mattie continued to work on her inventions until her paper-bag machine idea was stolen. A court scene between the belligerent thief and Mattie emphasizes the inherent discrimination women of the era faced: "Miss Knight could not possibly understand the mechanical complexities of the machine," the scornful thief tells the judge. Still, Mattie wins her case at the book's jubilant close. A one-page biography, which includes Knight's later accomplishments, completes the account. Watercolor scenes invoke the drama, and a banner of sketches showing various inventions runs along several pages. A short bibliography closes. Gillian EngbergCopyright © American Library Association. I checked out Escape of Oney Judge and Mirette on the High Wire a few weeks ago from the library. Loved them so much I researched the author's other books and found this one. My four-year old was fascinated today, wanted to read it twice and talked about inventing all day long. We had learned about inventors a few weeks ago and I had pointed out that a poster I had ordered, with thirty or so inventors, had no women! So to read this true, wonderful story about a woman inventor I think really inspired and excited my daughter. I have ordered all of this author's books and am so glad to find someone who is researching true stories of American woman heroes and writing lovely picture books about them. The illustrations are just precious, with the inventions running along the bottom of the page. FABULOUS.

You've probably never heard of Margaret E. Knight before. And yet you are intimately familiar with something she invented, a device used every day.Mattie invented a machine to make paper bags that would stand up on their own.What, you were hoping for something a little more exciting? More... worthwhile, perhaps? You want to know what the heck kinda invention is THAT? It's a USEFUL invention, is what it is, and it had the potential to make people rich... which is probably why a man tried to steal it from her before it could be patented, assuming everybody would believe him when he said a woman couldn't possibly understand the complexity of the machine.She was, in fact, the first woman awarded a US patent, and she invented several other things that the book doesn't really touch on.The book is well-enough written, and the story is a simple and fairly useful one. If nothing else, you can read it during Women's History Month and move off the treadmill of the same three or four tired old names.

gift for my granddaughter....love it

What I enjoyed most about this book was the information on Margaret Knight and the things she invented, including a machine that made paper bags. The author and illustrator sets her story well: the reader can see and feel the times and the environment Knight lived in, and can perhaps feel the forces that drove this inventor to create the labor-saving and life-saving devices she created. Well worth reading for the information.

Book was in excellent condition. Goes great with the Georgia Studies Weekly for Social Studies. I read it out loud and my kid enjoyed learning about this woman inventor.

A very empowering story about a woman who accomplished something more than simply marrying a guy who because president. These are the kind of stories that young girls need to read.

My granddaughter loved it.

Excellent book with a timely message about contributions of women. This book should be included in all school libraries.
