Review

“Excellent description and shrewd observation.”  (Times Literary Supplement) “The most vivid report, long or short, I have ever seen on Rumania . . . brilliantly written and mercilessly barbed. An unusually skillful and readable book.” (Ralph Thompson New York Times)"Well put together, always readable and often witty. . . . Countess Waldeck never protests too much; sometimes, one feels she might protest a little more. But all is forgiven in the end when her remarks are as shrewd as her conclusions are agreeable." (New Republic)“One might ask why a contemporary reader would bother with a book so old and outdated. The answer is clear. First, Waldeck is an uncommonly talented writer whose prose is a pleasure to read. Second, she writes authoritatively. Rumania lay on the fault line between Allied and Axis powers and was up for grabs, and Waldeck understood the dynamics of this power struggle. . . . In Athene Palace, she documents all these momentous developments with skill and panache, giving a reader an insider’s view of a nation and a people in turmoil and transition.” (Sheldon Kirshner)“There are many reasons why this book should be read. Those interested in the war will appreciate Waldeck’s shrewdness as an observer of the political scene. . . . Athene Palace also merits appreciation for the entertaining vigour of its language, in which Waldeck’s personality―catty, egotistical, mischievous and inquisitive―is constantly felt. She writes with acuity, élan and a sassiness that can border on the camp. . . . Waldeck’s combination of political alertness and literary talent recommends Athene Palace to our age as surely as her own.” (Steven Lovatt New Wales Review)

Journalism, as they say, is the first draft of history, and though R.G. Waldeck's "first draft" depicting the early days of World War 2 in Romania is incomplete, as all first drafts are, it offers wonderful insight into contemporary views of the war and the future of totalitarianism in Europe and specifically Romania. Did German officers really have secret orders to abort the Anschluss and retreat from Austria in the event of Allied intervention? Would a German invasion of the Soviet Union be "good for [German] morale"? History, as we now know it, has reason to doubt these things, but it's fascinating to read the views - either commonly held or whispered in secret - that informed the actors of the time.Throughout the book, Waldeck returns to a theme that is very relevant to our time of insurgent far-right political parties; namely, does fascism have a future in Europe? In the guise of casual conversation, Waldeck interrogates Nazi officers and diplomats about totalitarianism as a system and a philosophy; against the backdrop of the fall of Paris and the rise of Iron Guard in Romania, these questions are shown to be not simply academic (that these Nazis were seldom aware of her Jewish background is also a source of amusement throughout the book). Waldeck's conclusions on the subject place her in the company of Hannah Arendt not simply as a journalist but a political scientist. The book is engagingly written, making you feel as though you too are in Romania in 1941. I was sorry when the book was over, with only the grim consolation that the times ahead for Romania were dark indeed.

Written in the style of best and entertaining reporting and giving at the same time thoughtful analysis of a complex political situation, this book describes not only a few months in Bucharest at the beginning of the World War II, but genially pictures a prophetical view of what would happen in the region beyond the dramatic times it was published. As a foreigner who has lived now for many years in Romania, I can even say the author imparts a captious but caring picture of the country, which is still somehow valid nowadays and helps outsider to understand better its people.

This is great first person, eyewitness history dressed up as fiction. To me as an American I have realized that I don't know how a police state really works. This book explains its cruel effectiveness and puts it into the context of depraved fundamentalist terror. It is all being repeated in Iraq and Syria today and in the prisons of America's allies across the Middle East. One can only hope the retreat from this barbarity comes soon.

What an interesting perspective: That Hitler wasn't completely mad, that he had plans for all of Europe, and many people in place implementing (sometimes undermining) those plans; that the Palace provided back-channel opportunities for fraternization and communication amongst "frenemies"; that the Nazi's totally underestimated the will and manufacturing capacity of America; how differently things might have turned out had the Intelligence and quicker communications we suffer in modern times been available then. Perhaps his error was simply biting off more than he could chew. All of which serves to highlight Russia's recent activities on its southern flank.

Very engaging story of Rumania during the Nazi take over.

A fascinating story of how the Nazis operated by taking over inch by inch. Also surprising to learn that Hitler's vision for Europe was not much different than what is being constructed today.

very well written, a historical document (remember it was written about 1942) describing the meltdown of greater Rumania to a bout half its size. It touches me personally - I know some of it from personal experience.

Pretty good, not spectacular so no fifth star -- but it's definitely one of the best books I've read about Romania and the one that most clarified the political machinations of the 1940s.

This little gem of a book is fabulous: the format, the typeface and the anecdotes. Here in Provence I get a lot of visitors and while I know most of the markets she describes, and they are absolutely spot on, it helps to have this kind of a book to make it fun for everyone who comes to visit. The only problem is I've lost several and wonder if I'll get a discount if I order in bulk! And thanks too to Marjorie for getting the distribution IN France sorted before the summer season actually began. Just a little note for next year to those thinking of coming. Today is the 31st of August and we're all glad to see the back of what has been a very hot month. From now on, markets will be very busy but not as busy as July and August. If you can't stand the crowds and like to amble, come in the spring or autumn. And if you do come, here's a little plug for the best artisanal ice cream shop in France: visit Scaramouche in Cereste. They've just made the most delicious peach sorbet on the planet {Gwendal, and his partner in all things foodie - Elizabeth Bard, author of 'Picnic in Provence'].

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, and it was the best help in planning my upcoming trip to Provence!Upon reading this amazingly well written book, we planned our trip to Provence choosing the nicest looking markets. We were not let down! We chose Roussillon as our base camp, best town to stay in!!From there we would wake up early and visit the market Marjorie suggested for that morning, and then we would visit neighboring towns in the afternoon. This was one of our best trips, and I must say this book really helped!!

I just received this beautiful little book in the mail, opened it and found myself instantly teleported to Saint Saturnin-les-Apts where I sat at a café in the late-afternoon sun, sipping an Amandine and bau frizzant, taking in the sights and listening to the tale of Monsieur Talon, the Truffle-King. This is a remarkable little book: part travel guide and part poetry, carefully researched and lovingly recounted. Whether or not you are planning a visit to Provence, Marjorie Williams will bring you along on a wonderful adventure!

My copy of Markets of Provence arrived yesterdayand made my day! After devouring the wonderfully presented information, salivating overthe glorious pictures of foods my imagination hadme traveling day after day thru Provence's markets!!! Bravo Marjorie, your book once againmakes for a journey high on my bucket list.

A well researched useful book for those who prepare to spend some time in Provence. My upcoming trip is planned in large part based on this book as the farmers market is one of the main attractions of going to French countryside.

A market specific book unlike something you'd find from Fodor's or Rick Steves. It's broken down into the day of the week on which the market takes placenta the larger days the market is open. I wish I had had this book for the times I've spent in Provence to make the market finding so much easier. Different days mean different markets for some villages and when you show up looking for vegetables and only find a brocante.... But as I have no return trip planned for now, I love reading through it and hearing of the ones I have had the privilege of attending. The pictures are a. Wonderful add as well. Definitely a must if you are going to visit or have visited these wonderful markets!

Great guide for travelers to make accessible and describe the best of the daily markets in lucid, stirring detail, but also written so evocatively that it stands alone as a great read for the armchair traveler! The photos and descriptions brought vividly to life my own memories from travels in Provence, and have made me impatiently eager to return.

I live in Provence for part of the year, love the markets and think I know our local ones intimately, but Marjorie Williams has added invaluable information about outstanding vendors to seek out and a great deal of practical information for first-time market visitors. I was happy to see that she had included smaller, lesser-known markets like Ste.-Cecile-les-Vignes, as well as highlighting the widely known big markets. Kudos for this excellent and entertaining update!

From the Inside Flap

Continuously in demand since its first, prize-winning edition was published in 1975, this is the classic history of the development of the American atomic bomb, the decision to use it against Japan, and the origins of U.S. atomic diplomacy toward the Soviet Union. In his Preface to this new edition, the author describes and evaluates the lengthening trail of new evidence that has come to light concerning these often emotionally debated subjects. The author also invokes his experience as a historical advisor to the controversial, aborted 1995 Enola Gay exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution. This leads him to analyze the impact on American democracy of one of the most insidious of the legacies of Hiroshima: the political control of historical interpretation.Reviews of Previous Editions“The quality of Sherwin’s research and the strength of his argument are far superior to previous accounts.”—New York Times Book Review“Probably the definitive account for a long time to come. . . . Sherwin has tackled some of the critical questions of the Cold War’s origins—and has settled them, in my opinion.”—Walter LaFeber,Cornell University“One of those rare achievements of conscientious scholarship, a book at once graceful and luminous, yet loyal to its documentation and restrained in its speculations.”—Boston Globe

Lots of names. There is a lot of information in this book. I found it to be lacking in its dealing with Allied/Soviet relations leading up to and during the war. He really only brings up the conflict over Poland at the end of the war. He skips over anything related to why the U.S. takes a "firm" stance against Russia. What he writes is very thin. If you bring up that topic have some information about it in the book. The author seems to say that the real impetus for dropping the bombs was a post war leveraging tool against Russia which did not really work thus instigating an arms race / cold war. The book makes you think which is good. It really needs background on the entire political dealings with the Big Three and events that took place during the war between them.

An excellent summary of the political aspects of the A-bomb project, revealing interesting insights into the thoughts of U.S. leaders and the implications of their actions.

Book was as advertised, arrived as forecast, and was good value for the money. The book is a good addition to reference libraries.

The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki forever changed the world landscape. The Nuclear Age came to be and a new god arose out of the ashes. The atomic bomb and nuclearism (the worshipful embrace of atomic weapons) came to rule the world in the vacancy left by the Second World War. The bomb and atomic energy came to be viewed as deity because in the words of Robert J. Lifton, "what other than a deity could be capable of destroying the world?" "But a deity also must be capable of ruling and protecting the world, even of keeping the world going?" (From the foreword). The bomb was embraced with both fear and wonder as that of a deity capable of both governing and destroying the world in a single action. It is this deity's rise to power, which is here chronicled by Martin J. Sherwin. The complex political history is detailed from the beginnings of the Manhattan Project to the destruction of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Offering a fair treatment of all involved Sherwin provides the political backdrop to the creation of the atomic legacy, which continues to this day.In this work he deals with the scientists' struggles with the military and subsequent use of their work toward military ends. These "soldiers out of uniform" began the race for the atomic bomb against Germany yet towards the end of their work many became increasingly aware of the moral ramifications for unleashing such a devastating device upon humanity. The burning question which continually came up to both scientists, political advisors and the world leaders involved (FDR, Truman, and Churchill) was, "What role would the atomic bomb take in the postwar world?" This question often failed to illicit response and only came to its answer after the destruction of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Sherwin spends much time on the relationship of the Soviet Union (Stalin) to the bomb. In the end the choice was to not let the Soviets in on the secret of S-1 (the military designation of the bomb) and Sherwin highlights how many saw this as negatively affecting the postwar relationship between an already fragile wartime cooperation between England, the United States and the Soviet Union. While Truman sought to use the bomb as leverage (at the Potsdam Conference) against both the Japanese and the Russians it seems to have worked for the Japanese but failed for the Russians. Japan surrendered shortly after the bombing of two of its cities, but the Soviet Union became hardened to the U.S. and American-Soviet relations quickly deteriorated. Could the Cold War have been averted if Roosevelt and Truman only included Stalin in on the knowledge of the bomb? The atomic bomb brought about the end of the Second World War but brought about the beginning of the arms race and new war of nuclearism. While it was meant to be a means of peace during the war, the atomic bomb became a means of clouding the future of the postwar world. In conclusion, Sherwin quotes Henry Adams whom a century before the bomb wrote, "Man has mounted science, and is now run away with."This book provides an immensely helpful pathway into the politics surrounding the creation and use of the atomic bomb. Unfortunately the scientific dimension of the creation and use of the bomb is lacking. Nonetheless this book is useful for understanding the political climate of the time and for also setting the backdrop to the Cold War and future American-Soviet relations. It is a good read, which would have been enhanced with some pictures of the key players, maps of the important places, and photographs (carefully chosen) of the subsequent devastation of the bomb. While the political ramifications were effectively highlighted and questioned the moral issues while often raised were not adequately dealt with. While this is not a book on ethics it would have been interesting to explore the ethical legacies left from the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Sherwin does note that the majority of the political leaders never thought twice about using the bomb against Japan. I do not recall Sherwin connecting this at all with Pearl Harbor and I wonder what connection (if any) existed between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the unquestioned use of the atomic bomb against Japan. It would have been worthwhile to explore further the ethical/moral impact, which the bomb had on the world and world leaders. Not much is dealt with after the bombing and because of that I was left somewhat disappointed.Overall this is an excellent work, which details the political backdrop and milieu of the creation and use of the atomic bomb. It raises important political questions, which need answers. It unfortunately does not raise moral issues as such a topic should, but then again the purpose of the book was to show the political events surrounding the bomb. Nonetheless one wonders if the political arena and the moral arena can be separated. What is clear is that a new deity was created and released, one that continues to govern this world and strike fear in the hearts of nations, one with the power to destroy the world.

Since I am not a professional reviewer, my attempt may not meet with approval by the usual reviewers. Overall, I was bitterly disappointed in the lack of insight by the author into the coverage of this most important subject. Without doubt, author Martin J. Sherwin takes the attitude that nearly everything done by the United States government in its handling of the research, development and manufacture of the atomic bomb was wrong, morally and politically, and likewise, that the U.S. government unquestionably immorally decided to use the atomic bombs on Japan. The author wrote the book entirely from the scientist's point of view, assuming that since the scientists had the intelligence and knowledge to conceive of and build the bomb, they should have had major influence over the rightful decision makers and participated fully in all the decisions during the development of the bomb and allowed major input into the use of the bomb. The author takes the reader through the entire process of the conception of the science behind nuclear weapons, and each step of the way in its development, criticizes the U.S. government for not giving the scientist's group full and equal sway over the leaders of the U.S. government, which anyone with half a brain would know belonged exclusively and rightly to the proper governmental and military leaders of the U.S. Not only does the author take this ignorant attitude, but each step of the way in the process, leaves no doubt in the reader's mind that not only were the scientists unfairly left out of the major decisions in the building of the bomb, but that the governmental and military leaders in the U.S. were incapable of and morally wrong in their decision-making process. The author never misses a chance to deride, ridicule or otherwise criticize the United States government and military in their difficult choices. However, it is in his handling of the implications of the development and use of the bomb in the U.S. dealings with Soviet Russia and Josef Stalin, that the author fails most strongly, in his ridiculous demand that in order to prevent a later nuclear arms race, the U.S. should have brought Russia fully into the development and knowledge of all the atomic secrets. For this attitude alone, the author cannot be taken seriously. He totally ignores that the U.S. had to be friends with and financially support Russia during WWII to beat the German Nazi's but that the communist and totalitarian ideology of Russia could not be trusted to be let in on the atomic secrets. Of course, due to the fact that most of the scientists saw no problem with communism theoretically may explain this attitude by the author. Finally, in his coverage and criticism of the U.S. decision to use the atomic weapons on Japan, and in the telling of the complete story of the reasons for using the bombs on Japan, the author simply ridicules the U.S. for using the bomb, failing to fully realize that the Japanese military completely ruled the country of Japan and would never of its own volition have surrendered to the U.S., leaving the U.S. no other decision but to use the atomic weapons on Japan, since the only other alternative to such use to convince Japan to surrender, was an invasion of the Japanese homeland, with the clear vision of the almost certain loss of one million U.S. military casualties in such an invasion. After the deaths of 400,000 U.S. military thus far in fighting the Second World War, the scientist group showed its total ignorance in its criticism of the U.S. government in making the decision to use atomic weapons on Japan, foolishly believing that negotiation alone would convince the Japanese military to surrender. It is extremely disappointing to read a book showing the complete ignorance of the facts that while the scientists had the brains to invent the a-bomb, as a group, they didn't have the brains to realize the U.S. had no alternative but to use the bomb and to leave Russia out of the decision.

Book details the development of the atomic bomb, the U. S.'s determination to defeat Japan and keep the Soviet Union out of Japan. Was the bombing of Japan necessary to end the war remains a debatable question. For insight into the political scheming behind the scenes, this is a good book to read.
