On a Beam of Light: A Story of Albert Einstein, by Jennifer Berne

From Booklist

*Starred Review* It’s not easy to explain the work of Albert Einstein to a young audience, but this marvelous book pulls it off. It does so by providing an overview of Einstein’s life: the way he thought and how his remarkable ideas changed the way scientists think. Berne begins with baby Albert, who didn’t say a word. And as he got older, he didn’t say a word—but he looked and wondered. When he was a student, his teachers thought he was too different, but his differences led him to think about natural phenomenon like light and numbers in new ways. The book reroutes the text around events in Einstein’s life, such as his escape from Nazi Germany and his move to the U.S., and it only touches upon his work on the nuclear bomb. This is a more personal look, but still, it explains how he came to the discovery of atoms and his theories about the speed of light. The text could not have better support than Radunsky’s artwork. Executed on textured papers, the stylized watercolors outlined in ink sometimes eschew decoration, with the focus on Einstein and others in his life; other spreads are swirled with words and numbers. The book stresses that readers may someday answer the questions that Einstein didn’t get to, and an author’s note extends the text with paragraphs about Einstein’s pacifism, personality, and thought experiments. A book as special as its subject. Grades 1-3. --Ilene Cooper

A curious, imaginative, young boy, who barely speaks as a child and isn’t like the all the other students, nor does he want to be, grows into one of the most genius minds that changes life as we know it. A celebration of Einstein’s curiosity and genius will pique the interest of any budding scientist. A must have book for every classroom and home of the precocious child. Why I Like This Book: An amazing way to bring the life and work of Albert Einstein alive to children. What a perfect introduction to the young reader about the famous physicist who never stopped questioning the world around him. The whimsical illustrations illuminate each page, and it shines a light on the underlying message the story shares about the value of the imagination and how that should be nourished and not crushed. An awakening of the senses and a fascinating read!

I had to read this book to write a biography on Einstein for my Literature in Childhood Education class. It was cheap enough to just buy it on Kindle instead of hunting down in the library. I didn't think much of the class itself, but this book surprised me. I learned facts about Einstein that were designed to appeal for children, but why wouldn't adults like to know silly facts like Einstein hated socks? I learned a lot of quirky things about the man and I got a perfect score on my assignment. I'm very happy. The illustrations are consistent with a children's book and parallel the story very well, it would be easy for children learning to read to follow along with this book. Buy it for yourself or your kid! It's good!

Seeing my 7 year old read this book was an experience I will never forget. He often feels alone due to his gifted mind. He didn't talk until he turned 3 and was misdiagnosed with ASD and Asbergers. Once he started talking he interrupted his teacher with questions and was very exited to learn new things and explore solutions to his ideas. His kindergarten behavior was not asynchronous to his intelligence. which showed up during his ADHD eval. His IQ is in the top 2% on the charts which is great but the real lesson to learn in this book is to be yourself no matter how that looks to the rest of the world!

Amazing book! My 6 year old devoured this book in about 20 mins. He AND myself absolutely loved learning more about Einstein. The story is easy to read and it tells kids that it is ok to be different and in some aspect it is a advantageous feature to have and encourage them to never stop dreaming in achieving your wildest dreams. He read this book a couple of time and will revisit again the rest of his childhood, I hope!

This book has become a favorite in our house! While this book is recommended for the 6-9 age group, my 4 year old gets a kick out of it. She doesn't yet understand some of the scientific words and concepts (i.e. atoms, magnetism, etc;) but that doesn't stop her from enjoying the story. What I love about this book is that it's based on a real person and true events - finally, a children's book that's not based on farm animals! It starts out by detailing how little Albert didn't talk much when he was a child, was mischievous in class and getting in trouble and didn't relate well to the other children. It then goes into his career - how he wanted to be a teacher but ended up working in a government office. Eventually, the book talks about Albert's ideas and recognition. You also learn about Albert's quirks - how he didn't like to wear socks, enjoyed ice cream and the violin and liked to wear the same baggy clothes. Unfortunately, it does talk about his smoking pipe which I had to explain to my daughter - I turned that into a lesson about how smoking is bad for you but it was something they used to do in Albert's time because they didn't know any better! The hardcover version is definitely sturdier but the new paperback version holds up well. I do wish that they didn't put the font in a red color on some pages - it's hard to see with the background color.

What makes this book so perfect is the collaboration between the author and the illustrator. The pictures match the text so well, and really capture the intensity and chaos in Albert Einstein's mind. I've read it a few times and love it.

Although this book is meant for older children, I read it to my 1.5yo and he was hooked! Obviously he doesn't understand many of the main concepts, but he knows who "Albert" is and recognizes him in other situations. And he sits quietly and listens to the entire book which does not happen very often. I wish the authors would do more books like this about other prominent people.

Lovely story and illustrations. I understand why it was nominated for a Newberry Award. Can't wait to give it to my grandson for his birthday. I made him an Explorer kit, including a compass and a magnifying glass to go with it. The fact that it is the story of a real boy means that my grandson will have an interest in Einstein firmly planted in his young mind and heart. I think it could lead to reading more about Einstein as he grows older. And it will be so much fun to help him explore the world around him like a little budding scientist/explorer.

Review

"I am delighted with this translation of Mipham Rinpoche's Sword of Wisdom. Personally, this text has helped me so much in understanding the system of basic logic and reasoning that elucidates the profound meaning of the two truths. It is a true gem for beginners and learned alike. Time and time again, it can serve as an invaluable resource to refine and deepen one's knowledge of all schools of the Buddhadharma." (Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche)"Mipham's Sword of Wisdom is the essence of the Dharma itself! Khenchen Palden Sherab was a true lineage holder and scholar, a compassionate and humble man whose work can be trusted to be in perfect accord with the teachings of all the lineage masters, so we can rely on his teachings with absolute confidence. This text contains the power, blessing, and kindness of the incomparable Mipham Rinpoche, so it is like the very soul and heart of Manjushri himself! It is my heartfelt prayer that everyone read this text and take these teachings purely and honestly into their hearts." (Ven. Gyatrul Rinpoche)"I am very pleased that this seminal text by the first Mipham has been translated and made available in English. This book presents direct perception and reasoning as the most valid way to know reality, starting with the truth of cause and effect and extending to the realization of nondual wisdom." (Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche)“Although we think we have understood emptiness as the ultimate teaching of the sutras and tantras, we haven’t really delved into the depths of its meaning and still continue to see things with ordinary perception and are unable to rest freely in the ultimate true nature. Mipham provides the tools for us to actualize the supreme timeless awareness and become naturally liberated and boundlessly compassionate, which is the final result of our practice.” (His Holiness Shenpen Dawa Norbu Rinpoche)“The great scholar and advanced spiritual master Jamgon Mipham’s Sword of Wisdom is a classic work that explicates valid cognition. I am happy to see it now available in English with commentary and scholarly appendixes that will be very  helpful for serious students in understanding this profound and important text.” (His Holiness the Sakya Trichen)“I have found it to be extremely well written and with great blessings.  I am reminded constantly of Khenchen Rinpoche's teachings and his kindness, and I found boundless joy in this sublime work.” (Khenpo Tsewang Gyatso)

I was deeply affected in ways I wouldn’t have imagined possible by reading a book on logic. Because it is an authentic text to help the student use reasoning to gain certainty about the nature of mind, I decided to read it. (Normally, other gates to Dharma are more appealing to me, especially devotion.) But I’m SO glad I read this. I feel as though I should study it more carefully to truly do it justice, but even this first reading yielded insights which inspired me. Often I felt “oh, I know this line of reasoning, it seems obvious”, but having the cognitive logic laid out and dissected really shifted something in me. As Mipham writes, this path of logic brings confidence in realizing the true nature of mind. The translator's introduction provided a very helpful framework for approaching the book. Highly recommended, even for those, like me, who tend to avoid Dharma texts based on logic.

A perfect book if you want to understand topics like direct perception, inference, logical reasonings in buddhism, how to ascertain emptiness beyond concepts and duallity, the two truths and even more!Mipham is one of the gratest scholar's in Tibet's history IMHO, and Khenchen Sherab's commentary really brings all Mipham's wisdom out so we can also absorb it for the benefit of all beings! It's also a great book to start a serious study of Madhyamaka since it gives you the basics of reasoning and interpretation of meanings. So beginners and experienced practitioners will certainly benefit!
