A year ago I heard Seth M. Siegel speak at a Jewish National Fund brunch in Boca Raton, FL. I read his book and found it fascinating. He tells the story of Israel's history from before its becoming a nation until the present with respect to dealing with its water needs.The land of Israel has always had water as one of its principal challenges, since it is basically a desert land. The book follows its handling of this issue with respect to water needed for irrigation and drinking. Special commissions in the government were created with the strict purpose of improving the conservation of water and development of the country's water resources, its rivers, lakes and seas. There is discussion of the science of water conservation and the political considerations of the Palestinians, nearby countries (i.e. Jordan, Syria, Egypt). The last part of the book relates the development of desalinization plants near the Mediterranean Sea. Israel has been generous to other countries with their discoveries, even those that constantly vote against them when votes come up in the United Nations (i.e. China). Writing is simple and the science is fascinating and not too technical.

I have been to Israel. I have witnessed a country with difficult social struggles. This book is a beacon of hope created from the monumental history that is the genius of Israel water technology and philosophy. Devided into many segments of reasonable length, the writing is based on science, common sense, and sensitivity to the region's complex history. It is also a testament to the essential humanism behind Israel's ingenuity as it manifests in her victory over water shortage and the stress of immigration. Even if you have not been to Israel and are not Jewish and do not know the history of the region, Mr. Siegel guides you skillfully through all these and allows you to see that a solution for so many problems on this planet already exists if allowed to flourish. Please accept my opinion of a Must Read.

An easy read. Good documentation of how Israel methodolically approached the initial water shortage. Necessity was the stimulus for innovation. So Israel had to first conserve what water resources it had; from rivers and underground aquifers. This led to the first innovation of drip irrigation and other modern agriculture methods. Then to the development of methods to detect water losses or leakages in existing water carriers and pipes.Consumers pay for water consumption. So this develops some form of responsiblity in the consumer.However, finding new ways of using or extracting water such as desalination has been crucial in solving the water shortage. Israel now shares water resources with Jordan, as well as supplying Gaza. Israel has 200 companies involved in water engineering and agriculture. This has become a huge export of technology and an importance source of trade revenue. As well, it has served as a platform for friendly relations with many countries.I did order the Kindle edition but at times wish that I did have the hard copy, so that I could refer to previous chapers in a more convenient manner.I liked the book.

This, very readable, book describes the journey that a small nation took to build fresh water security for itself. Israel, a nation that used to be poor in fresh water but always mighty in innovation and engineering, shows the way for fresh water management to the world. I was so impressed with the book that I bought a copy for my engineer daughter.

I am very interested in this subject, since I live in Arizona. In a few generations, our ground water will be close to gone. It was incouraging to read of Israel's technology in desalting and filtering sea water and in an afordable way. Also the technology of water recycling and treatment. If our government would give as much thought to the subject as the Isreal government, we would not have the water shortages that now take place. Israel no longer has to worry about water shortage with population increases. In my state, water is something most people worry about.

Great book on an important topic. Here in NJ, there are almost-weekly reports of water issues, from lead to hexachromium and other dangerous pollutants to a long drought. State law requires state government to issue a Water Master Plan every 5 years; the last one was issued in 1996 (today's date is 1/25/17). Why reinvent the wheel? We need our politicians to direct NJ's water management team to learn from people who have proven success. This book was an eye opener to what is being done by world-class leaders.

I read this book because a friend was leading the discussion at a book group I don't usually attend. I was really bowled over--the writing was excellent and the topic was absolutely fascinating. I could hardly put the book down. I highly recommend this analysis of why Israel is a leader in the use of water for anyone worried about how droughts are increasing.

An extraordinarily well researched book that's a delight to read on a subject that we (in the USA) take for granted but which maybe a vital mistake. How water has been ¨found¨ in the desert, to the extent that it not only provides a bounty for agriculture but becomes a source of export in the region is truly miraculous. With our population growth we must begin to recognize the absolute necessity of understanding the lessons contained here.

This is such a great book to learn shortcuts. Once you start learning and practicing how to sketch quickly, this book will come in handy by helping you gauge measurements with your eye quickly.

Jim Leggit is an expert on drawing techniques that are fast and effective. In our modern age, everyone uses computer renderings, but a hybrid of hand drawing and computer modeling can make you stand out as a student or practicing professional. You don't have to be an "artist" to make beautiful drawings using Jim's techniques either. As a former architecture student, I have used these techniques to make award-winning presentations throughout school. I highly recommend this book for architecture students that want to make quick drawings while not staying put behind a computer the entire time.

This book is great! I have the first edition and there are a lot of things that are repeated and that is the only reason why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. This book really bridges the gap between hand drawing and computer drawing in clear understandable ways. I have not finished reading the book because I want to really absorb all the techniques. The only negative that I can say about this book is regarding the website. [...]. I did log on and the site itself is wonderful however, there is an option to find out more about Mr. Leggitts classes. I immediately made an inquiry and have yet to get a responce. This has been over a month ago. I am assuming that due to the volume of requests he has not had a chance to reply. The book itself is a winner!

Excellent quick reference on many different architectural rendering methods. I really like how traditional drawing techniques weren't avoided. Process for many different styles, quick overviews of the basics (like perspective, tools, layering, etc.) and many excellent supporting illustrations make this a great resource for those without formal training or still learning the trade.

Yes I definately do recommend this to anyone intersted in architecture especially if you have the idea like myself to draw it. This well written book shows anew way to be creative in using our current digital tech to draw and illustrate architecture...I dont see myself as being able to draw but this opens the way for me to do so..thanks!!!..Laurie

This is an ok book for the beginner architect. I was looking for a more visual representation but it has a lot of verbal advice that is very helpful.

Excellent book, wish I had it before starting Architecture school. Need more books like this that give specific "how to" info on to represent architecture ideas, since architecture professors are usually vague and open ended when teaching and helping. I speak from experience and I am attending one of the top B.Arch programs in the US.

I love this book. It is a great resource for all serious artists of all levels. It makes visual perception understandable and easy.

My two year old son thinks the book is fabulous, but the adults understand the words where my son is mostly going off the pictures.The book is basically this: Duck learns how to ride a bike and goes on a ride around the farm. Each farm animal makes a comment as duck rides by on the bike. The animal's comments range from cautions (watch where you are going) to some that sound mocking (show-off, not as fast as me) to more positive (wishing they could ride too), to silly (wanting to eat a bike). Spoiler: then all the animals go bike riding together.The trouble is, all the comments when read together with the images, somehow leaves a more negative impact than a fun or positive impact... and none of us (besides the two year old) enjoys reading the book.Also, three things bother me in the book. First, the animals "steal" bikes... the animals return them at the end of the book, but clearly the animals did not have permission to take or use them. I know that animals cannot ask permission, but this book is being read to small children. Children's books need to teach right from wrong, what is and is not appropriate behavior, etc. Second, the goat eats a bike's basket, but then the book claims no one would noticed the animals used the bikes - what child would not notice the missing or damaged basket?! Lastly, I don't want my son to stand on the seat and ride a bike with one foot in the air... yet this is one of the "fun" things duck does on the bike. Now if you have a lot of open space and are riding on soft dirt or grass and have older kids with great balance, maybe trying out that trick is a fun thing to do, but WE do not have a yard, live on pavement, next to busy highway, with a very young child... basically trying out that trick where we live will probably end in your death. This book is for very young kids, not older kids, so it should show things appropriate to that age group.Overall, this book is cute, but did not come off as positive as it should have and just did not meet the content quality we expect in books with 5-star reviews. I really like the idea of the story but it needed some improvements.

This book is quite fun and my children enjoy having me read it to them. However, I was not happy with the CD portion. The CD skipped the very first time we played it. I ordered two other CD books from Scholastic Audio Books at the same time and it turns out all 3 of them had defects with the CD. I wish I could give the product an excellent rating, but the skipping CD's leave me annoyed. I am keeping the books because now my children have read them and want to keep them. Instead I will make a note to NEVER buy another book CD from Scholastic Audio Books. The other books were Giraffes Can't Dance and How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon.

This book is wonderful--great story, captivating illustrations, and silly to boot. As a preschool teacher, this is a beloved book in my classroom. HOWEVER, when I purchased the paperback version for my own kids, I was sorely disappointed in the quality. Flimsy card stock cover, pages so thin they feel as if they were newsprint. I'm bummed I didn't spend a little more for the hardcover, which I would hope would be a better quality. Debating sending it back...

Love this book. Discovered it on a table by the cash register at Marshall's when my grandson was four. I loved it immediately and have bought and gifted many copies in between. Not a lot of text. Great illustrations. Exciting, enthralling little story. Younger kids will love it. Older kids will probably enjoy showing/reading/explaining to a child who cannot read. Adults can stand it again and again and again.

My four year old son and I love this story, we got a copy of it from Scholastic for I think $5, may have been less, anyway the copy we have has strong durable glossy pages with the art (which is one of the best parts!) using up all of a double page spread. When it was time to get a book for a friend's baby shower this is what I chose. BIG MISTAKE. The copy I received from Amazon has thin flimsy pages which are dull (not just not glossy, the art doesn't come close to popping off the page like in our copy) and there is a huge strip of white paper down the center of the book on every spread, right through the middle of the fun artwork. Wth Amazon? Love this story and highly recommend it, but get a good copy of it (try scholastic!).

I first bought this book at a book fair at my son's school when he was 4. He's now 12 and I cannot count how many copies of this book I have purchased for gifts over the years. It's great for girls and boys alike. The story is so engaging for young ones, and the pictures are so bright and colorful. My kids laugh from beginning to end every time! And the message is one I love...never be afraid to try something...even if others think you shouldn't or you can't. Kids like to read the same book over and over, night after night, and this is one I NEVER get tired of reading. I have a younger son now too and he loves this book too now! I also recommend 'How I Became A Pirate' by the same author (David Shannon). But that one is probably better for boys. This one is great for any child.

For me, any book that can be acted, as much as read aloud, is a book that I want to share with my listeners and one that I would definitely recommend to you. This book is both those things. The ingenious text invites you to mimic the farm animals and be the most spirited reader you can be. In the hands of a dedicated reader and/or a devoted parent, this title will prove an exceedingly satisfying read. The illustrations are gorgeous and can be most appreciated in the arms of a child while he/she studies them up close. The clever ending will hopefully tempt your son or daughter to say, "Uh-oh, what's he up to now?" and foster a discussion with him/her about what might happen to Duck next. This is one of the best examples of contemporary literature for young children because it so artfully combines smart writing with outstanding illustrations. Again, like so many of the books I've presented to my audiences at the Children's Museum, this is a book that should be included in your young child's library because it will undoubtedly be read over and over and enjoyed till it's worn.

EMEK is my favorite show poster artist. His talent is second to none. I love this book and keep it out so when friends come by they can see all the amazing art he has done. It makes a great coffee table book as well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that loves poster art or even art in general. You can't deny what a bad ass EMEK is. I hope I get to meet him one day.

This is the book I've been looking forward to with great anticipation for the past few years. I thought there was no way it could live up to my high expectations but, and I guess I shouldn't be surprised by this considering the immense talents of EMEK, and it exceeded my expectations. It get's 5 stars from me in every way...quality, length, breath, size, price, information, imagination, and even tongue and cheek humor. It clearly shows the reader the reason why EMEK stands heads and shoulders over every current modern day gig artist. I was happy to see the additional work of his talented wife Ronni as well. This book is perfect in all aspects for the person not familiar with EMEK's work and for the thousands of hardcore EMEK collectors. After leafing through this masterpiece you will find yourself spellbound and will be able to see things though the eyes of EMEK himself. This should open your eyes to a new world of perception. Since the beginning of his career (L'Imagerie) days, I have always been a huge fan of Emek's poster art.This book reinforces why I am such a fan. Many of his greatest works are on display to go along with some historic and biographic input.The man was born to draw and to enlighten us one and all.This book would make an excellent resource guide of his work and let's not forget about that old needy coffee table.I only wished that I had a signed copy.This book was easily attainable on Amazon and packaged and delivered swiftly and professionally.

This man is one of the best artists on planet. His work is inspiring as well as thoughtful and beautiful. I love his work so much I got his Skull Balloon from the Coheed and Cambria poster as a tattoo. I'm just glad I don't have to spend the thousands it would cost to get all the artwork. Much like the amazing posters depicted in this book, it is a work of art. Quality from front to back, it is filled with beautiful color photographs of an amazing amount of Emek's work. There are also nice touches that give you insight into the artist himself such as the sections on his family. Perfect for someone who has never seen his work before or for a collector and fan. Really a must have for anyone who loves modern art or music!

...and to think this is only a PART of his body of work is truly amazing. What a mind and talent!

I've been a fan of the roct art poster scene, and this is one of the nicest "collected" books that I've seen. The larger pages let the detail on the art come through, and there are a lot of prints represented. If you're a fan at all, this is a great buy.

Hope is also the cheapest of emotional commodities. So says Jenny Erpenbeck in Go, Went, Gone her timely and beautiful meditation about existence, belonging, and humanity. It is a novel packed with irony and emotion that simmers slowly until it insinuates itself first into the reader’s psyche and then the reader’s heart. It is the story of Richard, newly retired university Classic’s professor and his repeated encounters with a band of African refugees. They hail from a variety of countries but are evacuated from Libya after the overthrow of Qadaffi. Ironically, it is an overthrow instigated by the West that brings the vagabonds to Berlin and his doorstep. Ironically too, Richard is/was a refugee of sorts—from the GDR or the East—who had to be integrated when the Wall falls and the West was triumphant.So begins a meditation on what it is to be German, but more importantly, what it means to be human. The author stirs personal memories of life in the GDR and national memories of the Holocaust--that time when Germany failed so conspicuously to welcome the stranger. Today the clash is not religionist but cultural, the Rationalist v. The Islamist--the sceptic v. the believer. It is a tribute to Erpenbeck’s skill as a storyteller that as the refugees tell their tales, Go, Went, Gone never bogs down in political “reportage”. The protagonists’ immediate plight are all unique in their way--heartrending predicaments. Rufu the loner, away from home and utterly friendless, even among fellow refugees. Arwad from Nigeria, who at home could never stay more than one night. They were too poor—there was never enough room, there was never enough food. The reader realizes this is not an of inventory of the material but a human lamentation—the very best times of in his life were characterized by want, without even space enough to remain together. It is a hardship incomprehensible to Westerners who have trouble tearing themselves away from their smart phones to engage those across a dinner table. And the gut-wrenching journey of Rashid whose two children drown when their boat capsizes, literally with the cliffs of Italy in sight. Travelers trapped in a modern-day Scylla and Charybdis. This is irony careening into tragedy. Literature, like history, repeats itself.From her immediate vantage point, Erpenbeck gazes backward, imagining the historical migration of those from the Caucuses, across the Middle East and Sahara, scores of generations later completing almost a perfect circle. The wars that displace refugees is a modern Illiad. The journey of Africans to Italy, Germany and perhaps beyond is an Odyssee as fantastic and culturally shocking to these men as the journey was to the Greek's wiliest hero. The experiences build becoming more than cultural stories, Richard's engagement and kindnesses become human touchstones. "Never before has the connection between space, time and words revealed itself to him so clearly as at this moment. The backdrop of the desert shows it off in sharp relief, but really it's always been just the same all over the world: without memory, man is nothing more than a bit of flesh on the planet's surface." In an eerie parallel, the government solution is to transport the refugees (with Germans complaining of the cost) to an out-of-sight location. Richard wonders if "this nation of bookkeepers" calculated the cost of transport in the 1940s as well.The author is never scolding, and always generous but also steely-eyed. Erpenbeck sees the refugees impossible quandary: "denying them permission to work while at the same time reproaching them for idleness." She is realistic though in her assertion that Hope may be in great abundance, but it is not enough to sustain us and after years of frustration some dare not even be able to muster its pitiful consolations. When hosting their German friend, Africans pile his plate high with food they deny themselves. Why? "if you eat too much you can become like an infant...too spoiled...you can never know what is coming...and you have to be able to endure that." Go, Went, Gone makes clear this life is a crapshoot with each of us undeserving of our lot whether it is a fortunate or a miserable one. Erpenbeck constantly returns to this and the themes of shared humanity and responsibility. Differences such language, skin color, and religion fall away in shared car rides, meals or piano lessons at Richard's home. Go, Went, Gone is a profoundly affecting and deeply moving story that couldn’t possibly be more timely or more relevant. It needs to be experienced—particularly by our Dear Leader.One of the best books I’ve read in 2017.

I love this book. It's my favorite of the year, and as a retired English professor, I read all the time. Every word is beautifully written (and translated). Each day I couldn't wait to get back to Richard and his heart-breaking, delightful, inspired group of African refugees. This novel is political, poetical, funny, philosophical, and just plain wonderful from beginning to end. Some friends will be receiving this one for Christmas!

Each African immigrant has a distinct voice and history, plus a sad future. The central character, Richard, slowly moves into their lives, a witness to the Byzantine chains of the laws that keep the immigrants from making a life. His life and work are interspersed with the stories of the engaging but victimized Africans. Erpenbeck is an excellent writer, who makes this all-too-true story about refugees throb with life. It has special meaning for Americans, although it is set in Germany and plays against the atrocities of WW II.

This book was written to depict the sad fate of African migrants who make their way to Germany after first landing in Italy - because of German rules their situation is precarious since their port of entry was not in Germany. Their humanity is celebrated, as is that of the recently retired German professor who befriends them and tries to help. The migrants are very much individuals, and the professor’s circle of friends are also important to the story. It takes some pages for the novel to hit its stride and there are some elements which did not contribute much for me: the drowned man in the lake, the professor’s past infidelity.

This is a courageous and imaginative narrative dealing with a current and heartbreaking crisis. Using an ex-professor as the virtual narrator gave depth to the topic, as did his character and his friends situations. The words from the mouths of the refugees were the most powerful part of the narrative.It is hard to imagine that a country with an ex- Nazi and ex-communist history could be held up as standard bearers for compassion for the EU's treatment of the emigrant crisis, and reading this makes me really pessimistic about the fate of others in so many other less tolerant countries.

The book made me reconsider my attitude towards the immigrants from countries ravaged by war or famine. It is very well written, it does show how difficult the lives of the refugees are, but also how difficult to cope it is for the natives of the country which accepts the influx of people from very different cultures.

A well-written book which describes the ongoing problem we have in the world with the refugees coming from Africa. the book sets the story in Berlin Germany with its history of the Nazim and killing of the jews. Now they have to face a different problem. Many refugees arrive from Italy and try to settle and get jobs in Germany. Are they willing to help them or send them away? To where?

Beautifully written and masterfully translated, the allegorical presence of a nameless drowned man at the bottom of a lake (whose presence is revealed within the first pages of the book) serves to connect the current refugee crisis and the various responses to it to the different layers of modern German history of the last hundred years.
