As a parent of two young learners, these kind of books are always a bonus to add to our collection. Our kindergarten and first grade children enjoy learning about many different subjects, and books like this are very useful tools.This book very nicely balances text with visuals which I think is very important. Little learners are still very much visual learners and the colorful & detailed pictures help to draw them in and keep them engaged while the simple yet informative text helps little learners understand basic ideas about the subject being presented - in this book that teaches them about our first president of the United States, George Washington.I liked how the book gives some details about out first president, and works to create a connection between the reader and what they are learning. Seeing the pictures and being able to make those connections - it's important to understand what you are going to learn about, and the book nicely constructs a foundation for more learning the through imagery and information to take place. The pictures are colorful and nicely detailed.I was able to purchase this item at a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. This review contains only my opinions and I recommend this book.
Another excellent publication from Baby Professor's collection by Speedy Publishing. As always, short story with enough material to keep small children with plenty of interest and much to discuss further.You have to love this book about our Founding Father and First President George Washington, it is good to share with any small childen.This book contains excellent art and illustrations, basic knowledge suitable for any small children but also enjoyable content for any adult. It is written in easy language and certainly it will not go into deeper biographical details but it is good enough as basic information. It does contain illustrations about old paintings related to George Washington but it doesn't have explanation or very little about. I know that this book is for very small children, kindergarten for example, but it could have a little more information or guidelines included on some of the illustrations shown.Anyway, this is a great book, I did like it a lot and I do recommend to anyone.
First grade US History: the first President. Warning this review contains spoilers. I wanted to like this book. However I can not give a book a good rating if they do not use proper grammar. The second page with text contains one complete sentence and the sentence fragment “His father, a landowner and a planter†I at first had thought that this sentence continued on the next page, but sadly it did not. Over all this is a good book that presents a good facts about George Washington, commonly thought to be the first president of the United States. I think that while this book is lacking it is a good place to start the discussion with first graders about who George Washington was. The sketches in this book are really nice. I wish they had cited the artist and the name of the work somewhere. This book gives the fact that Washington was married. He married Martha, who was a rich widow. This book then continues on to tell us that George Washington was president for two terms from 1789-1797. The next fact stated is that he is the only president to have been elected unanimously. Some historical scholars would dispute this statement, along with argue that George Washington was not the first president, but I don’t think that discussion would be able to be understood by the target audience of first graders. Next we move on to a brief mention of the American revolution and the role Washington played. We are told about the Founding fathers. Washington is referred to as the “father of his country†This book ends featuring a picture of Washington’s bust on Mt Rushmore. I received this kindle e-book for free, (at the time of my review it is free to everyone,) in exchange for my honest review.
As a teacher, I was both satisfied and disappointed with this book. For being a first grade level, I was happy to see that the book talked mainly about presidency facts and not the mythical facts that many children get while studying George Washington (like he cut down the cherry tree/material his teeth were made of). The way this book is set up is using just a few simple facts. I believe that there could be more content in this book. First graders are able to handle more than what is written in here. One things I really did enjoy about this book was the way that the author used pictures. Not only were there various pictures, but the color contrast that was used really helps set the tone for the time era. Unlike the front cover, the pictures in the book are more colonial and not cartoonish. Although I do like the use of color contrast on the photos, I do not like the idea that every other page is a picture spread and has no explanation as to what is going on in the picture. The pictures that follow the pages with text, do not depict anything the text had previous talked about. This can make it confusing for some kids. Finally the other thing I really enjoyed about the book was the color contrast between the text and the background of the page. The contrast makes the letters stand out and make it clear to what is written. This book could be a great book to use as a differentiation in the classroom if you have students who are various reading levels. I was able to receive this book for free or at a discount for leaving an honest review.
