Chapter 1: Black Magic Basketball chooses you. It’s just one of life’s mysteries—like the existence of yawning or gravity—a thing no middle-school science teacher has been able to explain for ten thousand years. But everybody who hoops remembers the exact moment they were chosen. It gets tattooed in capital letters somewhere deep in the animal part of your memory, the same part of your brain that remembers your first crush. You show up to the park on a summer morning planning to put up a few jumpers, just for fun. Maybe practice a little crossover or reverse layup you saw on TV the night before. You make a bunch of shots, you miss a bunch—everything’s good. Except: It’s early, and you’ve got time, so why not put up a few more jumpers? And you do that. And you feel good enough to put up a few more, and a few more after that. And then, without even realizing it, you’ve left the planet. You’re somewhere else.   In this new world, it doesn’t matter that your arms and legs are deadweight, or that the back of your neck’s been on fire for hours, or that your mouth is Sahara-dry, or that your stomach’s rattling around in your abdomen like a pebble in a shoe. Doesn’t matter that your ball’s flat, the court’s cracked, the rim’s crooked. Doesn’t matter that you were supposed to be home three hours ago. Doesn’t matter how many you’ve made, how many you’ve missed. You’ve left Earth, and on your new planet, living means putting the ball through the hoop. A few more times. And a few more times after that.   When you do finally get home, you wash up, you eat, you do chores, you lie down. It should feel normal, but it doesn’t. Your granny asks what’s wrong, but what can you say? You’ve got a roof and a bed and a full stomach—you should be happy. All you know is that something’s off. Home doesn’t feel like home; it just feels like a place to rest, somewhere to wait around, a bus stop. Usually you can fall right to sleep, but on this night, you can’t. Since there’s nothing like a sleepless night for some philosophizing, it hits you that “home” is just where you feel most comfortable, the place that makes you feel the most like yourself. The place that makes you feel the most free. That place, you suddenly realize, is the blacktop. Out there on the blacktop, with the sun beating down on you, and your shot clanking off the rim, and your feet throbbing, you felt free for the first time in your life. Really truly free. That’s how you know you’ve been chosen. And when you’re chosen, there’s no turning back. From then on, forever, the game has you.* * * Granny likes the Strange Goods Superstore to open at sunrise. Of course that doesn’t mean she’s the one doing the opening. Earlier, as the sky went from black to foamy gray, she turned up the TV to ear-splitting volume and shuffled loudly into the bathroom. I was already awake, listening to her run the bathwater, hoping she wouldn’t call out to me.   “Get up, Janae!” she yelled, her voice made deep and monstrous by the steam. “You ain’t here on vacation.”   She hates it when I sleep late, and so I lay there, quiet and defiant. A few minutes later I could feel the air mattress shake as she marched down the hall. When she threw open my door, I only saw her outline. Her squat body filled the doorway like an eclipse, blocking out the light from the hall. I pretended to be asleep, watching her with my eyes barely open.   “You swear you’re the slickest kid in this whole world,” she said, flicking on the lights.   Now I’m sitting behind the register downstairs, trapped in that annoying spot between wakefulness and sleep. Right about now I’d kill for the thin, scratchy sheets on the guest bed, the same sheets my mom used when she was a kid. I put my head on the counter, and the glass holding our Weird Souvenirs collection cools my cheek. The lights are dim (we tell people it’s for the protection of our most delicate items), and suddenly I feel my eyelids getting heavy. I won’t fight it. No one’s coming in any time soon. Between lazy blinks I can make out the idling garbage trucks and taxis on the street, big clouds of exhaust chugging out of their tailpipes. It’ll be a few hours before the other stores roll up their steel gates and begin selling their conventional wares, their buttoned-up customers passing by our windows with curious glances. Our customers, like our hours, are strange.   The bells on our front door wake me up. I don’t know how long I’ve been out. A cold burst of air knifes in, and behind it is Ms. Evans. She unwraps the thick scarf covering her nose and mouth. She’s scowling, the deep wrinkles in her face crumpled into an angry mask.   “This doesn’t work,” she moans.   She slams down a multicolored wooden ring, and it spins on the glass counter like a top. Purple swirls of ancient-looking text run down both sides. On top is a cracked green jewel. Small splinters of wood splay out from the band. It’s from our igneous rock line.   “Sure it does,” I say, yawning for effect. She folds her arms. “Then how come I don’t feel any better?” “Our policy, Ms. Evans.” I point to the eye-level sign written in all caps behind me: no refunds.   Ms. Evans is our most loyal customer. She’s here every day, rubbing our lucky rabbits’ feet on the nape of her neck, weighing the steel pieces of our antique Ouija boards, flipping through our dusty treasure maps. It didn’t take much work to sell her the scarf she’s currently wearing. We tell people it’s made from Himalayan cotton, grown in the thinnest air humans can breathe and spun by the expert hands of lady Sherpas. I’d rubbed it on her cheek and told her the scarves improved circulation, feeling guilty as I watched her eyes light up with wonder. She bought five of them, and I helped her wrap the other four for her grandkids. Lying to her makes me feel crappy, and that, I’m now realizing, makes me angry.   I sigh. “Try putting it on a different finger.” She holds out her brown, liver-spotted hands and wiggles her fingers. “Which one?” “Any. Doesn’t matter.”   “Well, if this one isn’t working . . .” She pauses. Her fingers flutter above the glass. Below the glass sit orderly rows of gold-colored rings and bracelets; the little signs attached to them say they dramatically improve mood, joint health, and sexual stamina. Granny expects these to sell fast. “Maybe I should just get another one?”   I want to grab her by the shoulders and shake her. Ms. Evans, who told you to believe in this crap? I wonder. You won Science Teacher of the Year three times. You have a daughter who’s a doctor and a son who’s a detective. You once showed me how the inside of a watch works.   She’s bent over, staring through the glass, her lips parted as she reads the signs. I can see her pulse through the thin, waxy skin on her neck. Her wig is slightly crooked under her hat.   “Well,” she says, “I do need more stamina.” “Here,” I groan, grabbing the tray of rings, “let’s look at a few things from our new collection.” * * * I wait until Ms. Evans leaves to slam the register. I hate it here. I hate the wobbly, three-legged stool behind the register. I hate the stinky fly traps we keep near the bathroom, the off-key bells on the front door. Outside, with the fog rolling away, everything looks soft-edged and warm. If life were fair, I’d be out there playing twenty-one until my hands got calloused. I’d be talking shit to the boys who never put me on their team. I’d snarl at the girls who glare at me, as if I wanted their knock-kneed boyfriends. But Granny’s grooming me to be the next manager, and that means I work long hours cheating people out of their money.   The Strange Goods Superstore was opened by Granny twenty years ago. According to our sign, we’re “proud purveyors of the peculiar.” Walk down one aisle and you’ll find volcanic stones that boost energy. In the next you’ll find a pile of water diviners stacked together in a thorny mess. Our Egyptian salts, supposedly aged for hundreds of years in the tombs of pharaohs, are locally famous. When used in your bath, they’re supposed to make you appear younger. And if you bring in any of Granny’s numerous profiles from the local paper, you get a 10 percent discount.   Every summer my sisters and I are shipped up here to restock the dream catchers and healing cloths, the prosperity purses and books on elementary divination. I used to love it. Granny would sit at the register humming upbeat jazz songs. Vanilla incense wafted out of the front doors. Old dreadlocked guys would sit on the sidewalk just outside, smoking weed out of handmade pipes and eating sugar-free cookies. Granny would have to drag me by my collar to bed.   But one unusually warm night last summer I went to the kitchen for some juice, and there she was, boiling down a big pot of Morton table salt.   “What?” she asked, turning up the heat. “Santa ain’t real, either.” Granny says she wouldn’t trust my sisters to spot the stripes on a zebra. That means I’m the sweet-faced front for the whole operation, the one she plans to leave all of this to. Now I do all the restocking, returns, opening, closing, and bookkeeping. It’s joyless, guilt-inducing work. A dozen Ms. Evanses come in every day, looking for answers to failing marriages and arteries, out-of-control colons and kids.   Now that I do all the work, Granny stays in our apartment upstairs. Lately I’ve been starting to worry about her. She paces around the living room all night, chain-smoking and binge-watching Unsolved Crimes. Whenever they find the perp, she shakes her head and looks through the blinds suspiciously.   “Don’t you want to go somewhere?” I asked once.   Ghostly light from the TV washed across her face. “With what money?” “I thought you had money, Granny.” Her laugh is bitter and phlegmy. I suddenly remember the gallon of quarters and half dollars in the back of her closet—my college fund. “Okay,” I say, “let’s say the store made a bunch of money.” “Unlikely!” “Let’s say I make it playing basketball. We could go anywhere you want.” “Ha!” “What’s so funny about that?”“A boy’s game?” Granny asked. “You want to make a life playing a boy’s game? This right here, this is life.”

This is a dark take on the classic fairy tale Bluebeard. Let me be clear here that this is a dark take and definitely not a children's story. There is dark magic and body horror and abuse aplenty in this story. But, the writing itself feels more middle age than adult, so I'm not quite sure where to place this.If you're unfamiliar with the story of Bluebeard, it's about an aristocrat who has been married multiple times and each woman has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. He marries a young girl, who eventually discovers the corpses of his ex-wives in a room in his mansion. He discovers that she knows his secret and tries to kill her, but her sister's husband saves the day, she inherits the home and his riches, and everyone but Bluebeard lives happily ever after. This story isn't that one. Instead it takes several of the ideas from Bluebeard and grows a folklore heavy narrative story of a young woman faced with dark magic and horrors created by an evil sorcerer who has entrapped her.The strongest part of this book for me is how the folklore magic is interwoven into the story and creates a backbone which holds up the narrative. There are simple pieces of herbalism mixed in with traditional familiars, mannikens, sympathetic magic, and more. At times the magic feels disconnected, but that feels right for a world where magic is raw and barely understood even by the practitioners. The 7 brides are all interesting and unique and have their personality and histories and secrets. There are a lot of uncomfortable moments and sometimes the wives seem flat, but in keeping with what they've lost and the abuse they've suffered. One thing done well in this story is that you end up with the "tower on the hill" feeling. You are given bits and pieces of the world, enough to spark your curiosity and make you think but never enough to resolve into a full story. Ursula does this in a way that expands the world without making you feel like you are missing things. You are told about the castle on the hill and that there are interesting stories that come from it, but today you're just riding by it.There is a strong character arc for the main character who grows from a young girl fighting with a bullying swan to fighting an older man with all the physical, political, financial, and magical power.Oh, and there's also a cute animal sidekick. Every fairy tale needs a cute animal sidekick, right? The hedgehog is a good addition to the story, offering some light comic relief and subverts many of the tropes that dance around Disney animal helpers.I read this on Audible and the narrator was good. Some of the accents and voices were a bit odd, but overall a good reading.I give this a strong 4/5 rating with a few caveats. This is a story of manipulation and abuse of a minor (15 years old) by a man as old as her father. This is a story of psychological horror with a large amount of body horror thrown in.If you can handle those themes and love reimagined fairytales, folklore, and a heroic hedgehog sidekick, then you should definitely pick it up.

Where to even begin? Kingfisher takes the familiar tropes of the fairytales we all love and turns them into something fresh and really beautifully resonant. Rhea is a miller's daughter who receives a surprise proposal from a mysterious nobleman, and everyone knows that there's something weird about it, but it's not like she has a real choice about marrying the guy when your family's livelihood depends on not pissing off the nobility.I love the ethos that run through this author's work. She favors hard-working, sensible protagonists. At one point in the story, Rhea is comforted by the thought that she hadn't done anything wrong, she'd just happened to have run afoul of a lunatic. This is wonderful. In the real world, things happen beyond your control all the time, but often in fairy tales you're stuck with horrible nonsense because you were rude to a beggar and have to learn a lesson. This book refutes the idea that if something horrible has happened it's because you did something to deserve it.Fair warning: This book is darker than the author's other works written under the T. Kingfisher, with some particularly gruesome imagery.

Rhea is just fifteen, a miller's daughter, and no more than pleasing in appearance, so it's very, very strange when a lord shows up and wants to marry her. Neither she nor her parents think this is normal or good, but they're not in a position to say no to a lord who is, moreover, a friend of their own lord. It's even more disturbing when he insists Rhea come for an overnight visit at his home before the wedding. All of this is nothing to how disturbed Rhea is when she arrives and finds that Lord Crevan has six previous wives, only one of whom is respectably dead.Rhea soon learns that Crevan takes something from each of his wives when they marry. He has no plans to let her return home before the wedding. And he has tasks for her to do each night. If she fails to complete a task, he will immediately marry her. What does he plan to take from her?Maria and Sylvie may be potential allies. Ingvie is doing Crevan's work. Lady Elegans is dead. The other two? They are now the Golem Wife and the Clock Wife. Her only other ally, her only certain ally, is the hedgehog she met on the way to Lord Crevan's manor.Rhea is a smart, capable young woman, inexperienced in the world outside her village, but not ready to give up. She's completely believable for the circumstances she comes from. Both character development and world-building are excellent as one would expect from Kingfisher. This is a fairy tale plot used extremely well.Recommended.I bought this audiobook.

This is a guilty pleasure to counter my machismo and I love listening to these songs again.

As compared to his latest album, Melody Road, which the Neil Diamond groupies are all giving five stars just because it's Neil Diamond, this collection is all legitimately five-star Neil Diamond. These are the original recordings of 23 of his best compiled from different collections/albums, from his early stuff (i.e. Kentucky Woman, Sweet Caroline, Solitary Man), to 70s-80s hits (i.e. Song Sung Blue, Forever in Blue Jeans, America, etc.) The listener can do no better in a compilation of great Neil Diamond than this.I bought this after buying his latest album based on the rave reviews found on Amazon, and decided that either I was missing something or that the new stuff just isn't all that phenomenal, and that biased reviewers would give ANYTHING Neil Diamond does five stars. Sorry, folks, but that does people a disservice. A five star review should not just be given away because you think an author/singer/celebrity can do nothing wrong or not up to his/her usual standards. It's supposed to help people either unfamiliar with (not too likely with Neil Diamond, who has been around for 40+ years at least) material make an informed decision. Reviews that say simply "It's great!", "It's the best!", etc. not only are not reviews but are simply applause for someone the "author" of a review wouldn't give a bad review to if it were an album of belches and drum beats. These are essential songs for anyone who wants a Neil Diamond collection, and from his Tin Pan Alley days, to his rocking period (Cherry, Cherry, Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show) to his African period (Soolaimon), there's something for everyone. This, then, is an ACTUAL five-star collection that actually deserves the rating.

I didn't plan to write a review of this collection. However, I noticed that some reviewers complained about the sound, and some complained that these are not the original versions. I can't speak for them, but I find the sound to be excellent, and these versions are the ones I always heard through the years on the radio. I felt that I should say that. And, since I am already here and everything, I figure I may as well mention the songs I love the best. "Holly Holy" is the reason I bought this CD. It is more than a song to me. It is a spiritual experience. Others that I love, in the order they are found on the disc, are: "Song Sung Blue", "America", "Love On The Rocks", "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" (even without Barbra), "Kentucky Woman", "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon", "Solitary Man", "I'm A Believer" (even without The Monkees), and "Cherry, Cherry". What surprises me about this collection is that out of 23 tracks, I dislike only 2 of them. I really had expected to like only about half of them. One final thing: Neil Diamond's charisma. It has been literally decades since I've heard some of these songs, and I had forgotten just how emotional he gets when he sings. I thought I remembered him as being "light" and "laid back", but now I remember how intense he always was about his music, both writing it and performing it.

Pre Ordered this and got it fast...and at a lower price which the difference was refunded promptly. First Greatest Hits album since reuniting with Capital Records so all of these are original studio releases instead of later versions like on other greatest hit albums. If you love the Original Neil Diamond you will LOVE this one!

For the amount of songs included on this CD, this is a bargain for the money! This is a must for any Neil Diamond fan.Included in this album:1. Cracklin' Rosie2. Forever In Blue Jeans3. Song Sung Blue4. Sweet Caroline5. Holly Holy6. Red, Red Wine7. Hello Again8. Beautiful Noise9. America10. September Morn11. Love On The Rocks12. Shilo13. You Don't Bring Me Flowers (Original Solo Version)14. Morningside15. Soolaimon16. Play Me17. Kentucky Woman18. Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon19. Solitary Man20. I'm A Believer21. Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show22. Cherry Cherry23. I Am...I SaidThis CD encompasses much of Neil Diamond's long and storied singing career. Filled with most of his truly "greatest" hits, you will not be disappointed with this compilation. Buy, enjoy, sit back and recount the good memories of yesteryear.

Simply put, this is the best greatest hits release by Neil Diamond...ever. There have been several supposedly comprehensive releases in the past with 2 CDs worth of music. In fact, I've bought The Essential Neil Diamond and Greatest Hits 1966-1992 only to be disappointed. The problem with the others? Many of the songs are not the studio versions you want to listen to but various live recordings mixed in with the radio versions we are all use to. This deluxe version, on the other hand, contains 42 tracks and has just about every one of Neil's best songs from the original studio recorded albums, not to mention the great digitally remastered quality that you can't get on his classic albums. For only $7 more than the 1 disc version, this collection is a must buy for any Neil Diamond fan.

Memorize the Faith! (and Most Anything Else): Using the Methods of the Great Catholic Medieval Memory Masters, by Kevin Vost

From the Inside Flap

Yes, I know that memorizing the Faith is no substitute for living a holy life, but even devout people can't live by truths and precepts they don't remember. That's why, over 700 years ago, St. Thomas Aquinas perfected an easy method for his students to memorize most any information, but especially the truths taught by Christ and His Church. As the years passed, our need for this ancient art of memorization grew, yet somehow our culture largely forgot it . . . which is why today, when you and I try to remember a list of things, we have to repeat their names over and over. Or, to remember to call the dentist, we tie a string on our finger. And we clutch at any means whatsoever to recall our passwords for ATMs, credit cards, and voicemail, our login names for Yahoo, eBay, and Amazon, and the host of other names and numbers that clog our minds and clutter our days. Now, thanks to the delightful pages of Memorize the Faith!, you can easily keep all these in mind and learn the Faith! by tapping into the power of the classical memory system that helped St. Thomas become the Church's preeminent theologian, and made it easier for him to become one of its greatest saints. Here, Catholic scholar Kevin Vost makes available again Aquinas's easy-to-learn method the method Dr. Vost himself has used for decades to recall names, dates, phone numbers, the first dozen digits of pi (3.141592653589) and even whether, when his wife called him at work today, she asked him to bring home ice cream and toffee . . . or was it truffles and coffee? Indeed, Dr. Vost will teach you to remember virtually anything, but he devotes most of his book to showing you how to improve your memory of Catholic truths so you can live the Faith better. Memory is the foundation of wisdom. It makes holiness easier. To grow wiser in the Faith . . . and holier . . . turn to Memorize the Faith! today.

This is an unusual book. I looked at a lot of memory books along with this one. I am not a catholic but I found it very interesting the way the author used the memory techniques to learn various catholic rituals. I got an appreciation of Catholicism and it makes a lot of sense to me. It looks to me like they have lots of ritual to bring the spiritual ideas and concepts down to earth and make it real. For instance there is something about Stations of the Cross where the participant walks to a small table and counts a few beads. Then walks to another station which may be a picture on the wall and counts a few beads. Each station has meaning and to actually walk there and look and count the beads and maybe say a little prayer before moving on to the next station helps to cement the concepts into the physical universe. Anyway this is not about memory but Mr.Vost did a good job with his book.

Full disclosure: I actually did not intend to purchase this book. I wanted the other book, Memorize The Reasons, but it is not yet available in Kindle. I'm happy to have this book because I needed something to help me memorize the twenty Mysteries of the Rosary.I'm actually going to write the kind of the review that I wish I had read before buying this book. I had no idea what to expect; I know a little something about studying and memorizing since I have a PhD so I couldn't imagine what new method of memorization I was about to learn. For each group of items that you are going to memorize the author describes, and has a drawing of, a common room in an ordinary house. For example, let's say you are going to memorize the Ten Commandments. You see a drawing of the living room and ten numbered items. Number one is the front door, number two is the doormat and so on. To each of these ten items he associates a (sometimes wild or uncommon) idea, and then that idea is associated with one of the Commandments. At first I was taken aback, after all why would I want to picture of gun rack on the wall with a padlock over it. But when you think about it it makes perfect sense because I instantly remember that as Commandment number five, Thou Shalt not Kill. The method really works. So far I have memorized the 10 Commandments, the seven deadly sins, the seven virtues and the twenty Mysteries of the Rosary. The reason for four stars and not five is not the content at all but the Kindle version. The drawings and the text do not go together there are blank pages were there shouldn't be blank pages it is all kinds of messed up. Since we Kindle users did not have the luxury of flipping back and forth quickly to see the drawings, there should be a bank of all the memory devices made available to us in one place, maybe at the back of the book. If you think that the rating should reflect only the content and not digital formatting, think again. Publishers (and ultimately authors) must demand that digital users be afforded a quality product. At least furnish us with a well-made app to accompany it.I haven't read the rest of the book only because it has already served its purpose with the Mysteries. I just hope Memorize the Reasons comes out soon on Kindle, but in a suitable format.UPDATE: At the time I wrote this review, the Kindle version of the other book was not available, but now it is!

I absolutely loved reading this book. The main reason is that I learned this amazing method called "the method of loci". Of course, you can Google this technique and teach yourself, but with all the commentary and guidance that this book provides you with, I would strongly recommend that you read this book instead. I learned the entire 73 books of the Bible. The books come in handy especially when you are looking for a specific verse or verses in Scripture. The most important part of this book, I believe, are the images that you are provided with. Google "the method of loci" and get acquainted with the concept so you know what may be coming.Basically, you choose/imagine any amount of locations (in order) in any place you desire. It could be the parts of a car (like the author first did), the parts of a body, or the locations of a house (as done in this book). Then, you associate the parts with the locations. The association can be direct or can be a word that reminds you of what you're trying to memorize. This book does an excellent job of making images to associate with what you're trying to memorize. This book is much easier than "Memorize the Reasons!" by the same author, Kevin Vost.If you buy this book, remember this information regarding practice:I would read and practice a chapter at one time. That would mean I'd memorize around 10-15 things at once. After contacting the author, he told me to practice 10-15 minutes daily, focusing on just parts of the house, maybe a room or two a day, or the material in one or two chapters a day. He also recommended that I practice the material backwards or even randomly (having someone call a number 1-46 and answering with which book from the Old Testament).

Very glad I found this book. I am 50 years old, product of Catholic school education through high school. I am returning to college to get a degree and was struggling quite a bit. Then I thought... Wait, I can still recite the Mass and my freshman year Spanish lessons. How was I able to do all that pre-computer age? When I saw this book I knew I had hit on the answer. Since devouring this book I have also read summa theologica and other writings to expand my own understanding and to weave my faith and practice into other areas of my life. Improving my recall of facts has freed my brain up to think and analyze.

Dunn’s book addresses a host of intriguing questions such as:-Why are there diseases that disproportionately attack those in the richest parts of the world while being almost non-existent in poor countries?-Why is obesity at epidemic proportions among modern humans?-Why—while people have diverse tastes overall—do there seem to be universal preferences for sweet, salty, and fatty foods?-Why are so many people’s lives wrecked by constant stress and worry?-Is the Appendix really a vestigial organ with no apparent purpose? As the subtitle suggests, this book is about the role that other species have played in human evolution and the way we look, behave, and think today. The message of The Wild Life of Our Bodies is that humanity’s proclivity to see itself as an island--uninfluenced by other species--has its cost. The book is popular science--approachable to a layman but with the usual disdain for gratuitous assertions and shoddy reasoning that define the scientific though process. That being said, Dunn does put some editorial opinion out there in ways that might appear as fact in a slipshod reading. The most prominent example being Dunn’s suggesting that what best defines humanity is not our intelligence or ability for abstract representation (or even our physical appearance), but that we are the only (first?) species that has killed other species off not purely of self-defense or for food, but to exercise control over our ecosystem. I doubt this would strike a majority of impartial scientists as a fair and unbiased way to define humanity. Granted, this point not what The Wild Life of Our Bodies is about, and whether one thinks this it is fair or not is not critical to whether one will find the book to be of value. However, the idea (and the fact) that humans have zealously killed off other creatures is certainly relevant to the discussion at hand.If “terraforming” is the term for how an alien race might environmentally engineer Earth to make it suitable for them to live here, perhaps we could call humanity’s assault on other species “bio-forming” of the planet—choosing a roster of species that strikes our fancy. All the time humans were trying to make ourselves more comfortable by getting rid of inconvenient species, we remained ignorant to the downside.Dunn covers a broad range of mismatches between who we are evolutionarily and how we live in the modern world. “The Wild Life of Our Bodies” suggests that, like the pronghorn antelope, humans are in many cases overdesigned because of the loss of species (parasites, predators, symbiotes, etc.) that helped to make us who we are today. (One question that once puzzled biologists was why pronghorns were so much faster than every species they faced.)While it sounds good to be overdesigned (at least relative to the alternative), it’s not without cost. In our case, we had guts that were supremely adapted to having parasites, but the lightning fast (on an evolutionary timescale) elimination of those parasites has left us with bodies that attack a non-existent enemy and this has resulted in a number of new diseases. We are used to diseases that succeed in the poorest—and, hence, least hygienic areas-- but disease that mostly attacked in the cleanest places on Earth have puzzled us for some time. Crohn’s disease is a prime example. “Rewilding” (i.e. putting parasites back into) the guts of Crohn’s patients has shown positive results.Dunn lays out a couple of the theories as to how the loss of our intestinal bacteria may result in a number of first-world ailments. Interestingly, some of these diseases aren’t even digestive in nature, and might seem to have no logical connection to gut bacteria. However, our body’s systems are a system-of-systems—i.e. they are integrally linked. One issue is that some parasites have been able to mask their presence, and our bodies have learned to present a heightened response to account for this veiled threat. Today our systems can’t tell the difference between our squeaky clean guts and a gut full of these sneaking parasites so it drops the immune system version of an A-bomb.This is one example of why some diseases don’t exist in the third-world where the body knows what parasites it’s up against. One might say, “Yes, but these ailments of over-reactive systems can’t be as bad as the effects of the parasites.” That’s often not true. Most people with internal bugs (we all have them to some degree), don’t even realize it. The fact that people with Crohns’ are willing to have predators implanted in them speaks to this issue. There has been concern for years about downside of the rampant use of anti-bacterials, antibiotics, and antiseptics, and this is a topic Dunn addresses as well. For example, there seems to be little evidence that such agents in soap do any particular good, but they decidedly do bad (encouraging drug resistant species.)Perhaps the single greatest change in the nature of homo sapiens life resulted from the agricultural revolution, and Dunn delves into how this seminal event changed our bodies. With paleo-dieting all the rage, it will come as no surprise that there have been some major changes to the human diet since our hunter-gatherer ancestors roamed the Earth. Once again, we have bodies built on an evolutionary timescale, and they don’t necessarily cope well with our new diets. One problem is that we have strong hardwired drives for foods that were a rarity in our species’ past, but which we now produce in abundance. For example, we eat far too much refined sugar because our bodies are wired to love sweet, but that kind of food was rare to our pre-agricultural ancestors. Hence we have the existence of diabetes, and its greater prevalence where high-sugar diets are common. Many people are also saddled with an evolutionary advantage to store fat because their ancestors come from a clime where food was not abundant year round. The problem is that now there’s a grocery store on every corner and this once great advantage is contributing to burgeoning waistlines.I gave this book a high rating on the grounds that it presented a lot of food for thought, and that’s what I most value in non-fiction. Some of the theories may turn out to be incorrect, but this book offers one a lot to think about and clear explanations of the bases for what can otherwise seem a little outlandish. There is also some wit in places that contributes to heightened readability.

This book examines what are lives are like without the various species we evolved with. In a lot of cases we face issues we never had to face with them. There are plenty of things to think about when reading this book. After an introduction in part one, part two explores why we might be afflicted with Crohn's Disease and other auto-immune diseases in the developed world, but not in other parts of the world. The answer very well might be that we in the modern world with its cleanliness and health care are missing the worms that infect the rest less fortunate part of the world. Less fortunate in the sense that they live without what we have come to rely on and aspect. If we factor in their lack of Crohn's Disease and its like, the matter might not seem so clear. One scientist wondered about our lack of worms, and if it could be responsible for these diseases. In an actual clinical trial Crohn's patient were given a benign species of hookworms, and most of those given the worms either improved or went in to remission. The reason that auto-immune diseases are prevalent might be that without the worms in our bodies for the immune system to fight it attacks our own bodies. Of course, there is a lot more research needed to provide that direct link. It's possible that there could be alternative explanations, or it might be only a part of the explanation. The next part covers the trillions of bacterica that live in and on us. Research has shown that a lot of the bacteria in our guts are beneficial. These bacteria help us digest fiber and play a role in our immune system. Other research has shown a correlation between low fiber diets and colon cancer. The appendix is discussed as being a beneficial organ, long thought to be a relic and useless. Studies have shown that a particular antibody we have actually benefits good bacteria in our appendix. In the developing world where the incidence of appendicitis is rare the appendix replenishes their guts with the good bacteria that live in the appendix after a bout with common diarrheal diseases. Without the need to repopulate our guts in the developed world the appendix can become blotted and rupture, sending the bacteria into the body cavity where it can have deadly consequences. Again more research is needed to improve our understanding of our interaction with the bacteria that could be considered a part of us.Part four covers how domestication of plants and animals have changed us. For me there was not much of interest in this part, except for lactose intolerence was reverse in cultures that domesticated cows and other milk producing species. The subject of part five is the relationship we had and now have with predators. There is a theory that poisonous snakes are responsible for our excellent color vision. In other primates, the better the vision, the more poisonous snakes were in the environment. There are other explanations for color vision, such as the ability to spot nutritious fruits. The modern plague of anxiety disorders may involve a misdirection of fear from predators we used to come across with some frequency. In part six the creatures that live on or did live on us are discussed. There is a theory that our hairlessness, which evolved in relation to lice, ticks, and other bugs that dine on our blood, has led to xenophobia. This theory could be a stretch, but is plausaible. Our hairlessness has also led to our being prone to skin cancers. The final part is on how we could make are city environments more like those we evolved in. Massive rooftop gardens and whole vacant buildings acting as natural cliff environments, which are thought to be part of our evolutionary environment. This section I view as pie in the sky type thinking. Although I believe we need people to dream big, because good things have often come with those dreams and people. The book as a whole is pretty good. It was for the most part interesting throughout. I like the fact that the author presents experiments that support the various theories proposed in the book. The author also did not actually do any of the experiments or propose any of the theories explained in the book. But, like a good scientist he assesses the different theories and their weaknesses, which all of them basically had.I would recommend the book for those interest in our evolution with other species in our environments, and what might be the result of not having them in our environment anymore. Like I said the author is careful in presenting the facts, based on experiments, and the proposed theories. This should be appreciated by readers who value honesty by an author in presenting hers or his ideas. I think it is incumbent upon an author to present known and possible problems with his or hers ideas being presented.
