From the Back Cover

Over four decades ago, a diving accident left Joni Eareckson Tada a quadriplegic. Since that time, she has become a beloved writer and speaker to millions. But today, Joni faces a new battle: chronic, unrelenting pain. As she writes, Just as I said to God years ago when I was first injured, I find myself praying, Lord, I can't live like this for the rest of my life! This ongoing urgency has forced me to look back on familiar scriptures and examine them from new angles. Does God miraculously intervene in the lives of all who pray for release from migraine headaches, multiple sclerosis, cancer--or, in my case, chronic pain? And if not, why not? Here Joni invites you to walk with her through an intense and baffling season of her life. Her words offer not a bundle of ivory-tower theological conclusions but intimate insight from a woman on a journey--a woman who believes in healing from a God who chooses when that healing will come.

Joni Eareckson Tada wrote this book in the midst of pain and suffering, from the trenches. Having prayed for healing, the answer was "no" or "not yet." How do you deal with that in your Christian life? How do you accept pain and suffering when you know God desires your health and wholeness? This book is all about that struggle with pain, suffering, and loving God through it. It is written with maturity, with experience, and with love. The book is divided into ten chapters, that ask questions like: "what benefit is there to my pain?" and "how can I go on like this?"Tada reaches into her almost forty years of experience as a quadraplegic to answer these questions, even in the midst of her own questioning. As someone with a rare, treatable but incurable endocrine disease, I found this book to be of tremendous benefit. These are questions I have often struggled with, and her perspective, biblical insight and seasoned maturity brought a fresh breath of hope to me.This book will be a terrific gift to someone you know who is suffering through disease, illness and pain.Five stars, without question, for its authenticity.

As a chronic pain sufferer, I REALLY appreciated Joni's discussion of the God who fights in the trenches with us and meets us where we're at. One of my biggest struggles was that syrupy, flowery Christianese did nothing to help me cope with physical pain and its emotional toll because it felt so disconnected from where I was at. This book helped change my thinking so that what I considered to be a handicap was actually a spiritual advantage for me if I leaned into God to deal with it everyday. Life should not by our power but by His alone. She discussed many helpful things but this was by far the most distinct message that you don't typically come across in other books on the subject of suffering.

In this book Joni plainly shares her latest struggle with intense physical pain. Due to the pain she has re-visited the truths she has lived by the past 40 years of her disability. Her writings come from a place of reality. She does not white wash or sugar coat the reality of the pain or the struggle. She shares clearly what she has learned and practiced to stay focused on Jesus and not get sucked into and stuck in doubt, self-pity or despair.I loved this book, found it extremely helpful, inspiring and timely. The grace of God upon Joni's life is incredible and so God glorifying.I think every Christian would benefit greatly by reading this book.

Excellent down to earth look at some of the tough things of life from one who is both joyful and encouraging in spite of having her world reduced to a wheel chair existence at the age of 17.. Joni has been through way more than most of us in America can hardly imagine in the way of loss and suffering. There's no sugar coating here, but just a realistic look at life here on earth as not the end all, because the bible teaches that in this world we will have trials and tribulation but to rejoice because our names are written in heaven if we we're following Jesus and are trusting Him to have died in our place for our sins There are few who will not experience suffering at some point in their lives and Joni gives us hope that Jesus Christ can see us through even the worst of times. I love that Joni is not afraid to admit to some concerns as to being able to continue in pain if God doesn't intervene. and it's refreshing that she doesn't claim to have the Christian life all locked up in a nice package or formula. In spite of some of the "name it and claim it" preaching we find prevalent in our society, Joni is an example of one who has seen God use her in the lives of many many suffering people who could not relate to her in the same way if her life was without handicap. Of course, she prays for and would love to be healed, but God has not chosen so far to do so and, if we're honest, He is not bound to heal any of us physically, but is most concerned about our souls. At the writing of this book, Joni had been experiencing much greater almost unbearable physical pain and as of the date of my writing here, she is still on the air and sounding good, so I'm hoping the Lord healed her or gave her some way to cope with the pain since this book was written. I read the book a while back and am probably not remembering it fully, but I would highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to see a life of one who walks with God through really hard times and wouldn't exchange her life for one of a whole body and ease in life without Jesus Christ..

Enjoyed this book quite a bit. I would recommend it to anyone, but especially those struggling with physical trials. My main problems lie in the realm of mental health, and I also got much from this book. There were at least two different places in it that moved me to tears. One place in particular moved me to tears of appreciation and joy at the thought of what Joni Tada was speaking of, which I'd like to share here but I don't want to spoil it for anyone. This is a book, especially if you are a Christian like Joni Tada is, that should not cause you any thoughts that you wished you had not read it. I firmly believe that. I think you will truly appreciate her story and the stories of other people within it. Thank you for reading my review.

Unlike preachers in which everything always works out well for them--they are very shallow--I can relate to Joni. For some of us with medical problems who suffer daily, everything doesn't always work out. God is God, and he doesn't always heal everyone in this fallen world. It really makes me wonder if people who have it so good would still follow Jesus if their bottom fell out.
