I've been really curious as a grad student what MI is all about. This book won't make a master of MI out of you, but in an hour of reading you'll have a solid idea of how the basics are performed.Be informed that this is a very short read. The average reader will finish it in about an hour. It does provide step by step instuctions, but in a simplified summary fashion. If you are looking for more detailed information or instructions, this is not the book for you.
The book is short but very helpful and informative. I took a formal training in MI, but before I did, I read this book. It allowed me to better understand and be prepared for the training. I also reviewed the book afterwards for a more thorough understanding.The book by itself though is an excellent resource. If you're looking for an abbreviated version to get your toes wet in motivational interviewing,this is the book to read.
This is exactly what it claimed to be: a simple but direct instruction into motivational interviewing. I love how the author provides the instruction on a process flow, complete with self-evaluation tools and things to observe in client responses that help one know that they are successfully applying the technique, or an adjustment needs to be made. I feel very equipped to begin using these skills with the clients I serve.
