Maida Heatter, a.k.a. "the Queen of Desserts", is the author of nine classic dessert cookbooks, including the New York Times best-seller and James Beard Award-winning Maida Heatter's Book of Great Desserts. It is fascinating to pick up any of Maida's books, as they are written so clear and wonderfully, and always produce a delicious product. She has a way with telling the reader how to do something as if she is standing right there next to you in the kitchen, directing you to stir the dough this way, or make this that way. A must for any cookie aficionado or fan of Maida's!
This book has lots of lesser known cookies that have probably been mostly forgotten over the years. I've loved everything I've baked from the book, and appreciated the extra notes to tweak the recipe in additional ways. Nothing has been too complicated to make, as the directions and steps are well explained.My only real complaints about the book are the ingredient lists and length of recipes. The ingredient lists run down the left side of each recipe, so your ingredient list may span two pages. This can make it easy to forget something if you aren't paying too close attention. The directions also span multiple pages, which requires you to flip pages to line up ingredients to steps. It would have been nicer if they did a larger format printing to eliminate this issue.
I bought this book when I was buying Maida Heatter's Cakes because amazon coupled them in one of those too-good-to-pass-up deals. Don't ask me about the cakes; I've been too busy with the cookies. There are so many things I like about this book. The cookies are not the usual over-sweet cloying recipes you find in more recent cookbooks. Lots of spice, nut and gingerbread cookies, and the chocolate recipes are fabulous - The Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookie actual is chocolate AND peanut butter. Every one of these that I have taken in to work as been declared "The Best Ever!" Most of the recipes make 36-48 cookies, which is nice, and I especially like the "skillet" recipes, where you melt the butter, put the rest of the ingredients in the pan, and mix. Couldn't be easier. I will warn you, there are no pretty pictures, and Mrs. Heatter (rhymes with "eater") expects you to know a little something about cooking and have enough sense to figure out a few basic things. I used live and die by the King Arthur Flour Cookie Cookbook; now it's all Maida all the time.
Noting the price on the offer of this great book, I eagerly ordered. Unfortunately the print is too pale and also small.Of course the recipes are great !Cook books, as a rule are expensive. So here was a lesson. There are no bargains.I will share with my younger grandchildren who bake and will appreciate the exceptional detail.
I truly believe a cookbook should be judged on the merit of the recipes it contains, and this cookbook is stuffed full of every cookie recipe a person could wish for, and they're good. Really good. They get 5 stars. That said, the format of the book is so crappy it makes me want to have a serious heart to heart with whoever made this terrible mistake. No pictures. I can live with that, but come on, we all love pictures, am I right? There should never be more than one recipe on a page unless there is a clear definition between them. Some of the recipes have half the ingredients on one page, the other half on another page, directions for the recipe to the side of the ingredients, and then part of the next and previous recipes above and below! It's downright disgraceful.
There is none better.
I was mostly pleased with the recipes in this book, great variety. The only thing missing is pictures of what they should look like since many of the cookies are new to me, I have no idea of how the finished product should appear. This helps a novice baker. Otherwise it is a very good cookbook.
Wonderful recipes - great directions.
