It took quite a long time for me to finish this book. I have slowed down as I get older, BUT, it was worth all the hours I gave to it.It is a subject dear to my heart. I learned new insight and understand better the necessity, from God's Eternal Purpose perspective, why the Temple, why the Sacrifice? In four words: His Son, Jesus Christ!I don't think that anyone, not even 'scholars' can get it all, but every insight is faith building.Mr. Edersheim's account is very detailed, and needs to be because God is very detailed and each detail has a significance, andeach links to the next or to each other. I enjoyed this book (e-book) very much. If you are interested in the 'details' this is anexhaustive rendering of which you will be enriched. Amen.
I was actually expcting a more esoteric approach which deals with the symbolism of each and every aspect of the temple. As a result I could only give this product 4 stars. However, the information presented in this book is quite detailed. If you were a priest serving at the temple, I am sure that you would only need this book and no other. Inside it includes a detailed description of the temple and its environment, the utensils used within, and what the priest is to do for each major holiday, Sabbath, Passover, Pentecost, Day of Atonement, Feast of Tabernacles, New Moons etc. Also included are other typesof scarifices for specific purposes. The only thing here is that there really isn't much new. Almost all of the material can be found in other Judaic texts. What the author has done here is he skillfully brought all the relevant material togehther into one place. And Yes. There is an Active Table of Contents with Illistrations all at a very affordable price. A rarity indeed for Kindle books.
This is the best commentary I have read on temple worship. This book is very detailed in its description of the temple and the practices that were performed for temple worship. Even though it is very detailed, the narrative flowed in an orderly fashion and I found myself intrigued by the descriptions of the various events. Dr. Edelstein uses many resources such as biblical, extra-biblical, non-biblical (Josephus) and many Jewish documents. Even though he uses all these different resources, the manuscript is not heavily cluttered with footnotes As a reference source for temple worship, I would recommend this commentary especially bible teachers. I`m definitely keeping this book in my library.
A scholarly and well-written book giving historical and Talmudic examples and proofs of customs, ministries, and services of the Temple during the Herodian era, i.e. the Temple used when Jesus lived. It is very informative. I really enjoyed it, but I found some of the customs recorded differently in other books written on the subject. But is a good summary. Other books may give more detailed histories and a more in-depth analogy to the fulfillments found in Jesus Christ. Still, I'm glad I have this book in my library. Good resource.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is meaningful because I am a Gentile believer and follower of Yeshua. I have visited Israel and the currant Temple mount in Jerusalem twice and am preparing to return again. I love the Old Testament, the history, and beauty of the Temple. The physical Temple will be rebuilt one day. Everything has a meaning and purpose, nothing is by accident. Yet I understand, that I am also a temple for Jehovah and I have not been made my physical hands. I would highly recommend the book.
In this book, Edersheim does a brilliant job of organising the various details of first century worship in the Jewish temple, making it accessible to the modern reader. The first few chapters describe the physical setting and furnishing of Jerusalem and the temple. After providing that, Edersheim systematically explains the various categories of offerings (burnt offerings, sin offerings, peace offerings, &c.) and the Jewish festival cycle. He relies both on the commandments as given in the torah, and the subsequent traditions which grew up in post-exilic Jewish worship to explain things as they were when the New Testament was written. When appropriate, some space is devoted to differences of opinion amongst the various rabbinical schools.Numerous footnotes referencing scripture and various tracts in the Mishnah are provided, but so many as to be distracting. The only real criticism I have of the book is that it is over 100 years old. One suspects that research within the last century might expand or clarify sections. Also, monetary equivalents are given relative to British Pounds Sterling of the 19th century; not particularly helpful.I would also offer a caveat. I bought mine used, and did not get the edition with the pictures and illustrations - so be careful to make sure you get the edition you intend. All things considered, it's a must-have book for anyone who wants to understand the numerous temple references in the New Testament.
Edersheim gives helpful cultural background information to what pilgrims did and saw at each of the religious festivals celebrated by Jews in Jesus day. Our cursory reading of the gospels of Jesus words at some of these festivals without the details of what visual sights were going on-provided by Edersheim-- could cause Bible students to miss the connection of Jesus words about being "the light of the world" and the concept of being the living water in John 7. It also helped me to see the expansion of celebrative practices at the festivals that expanded the basic requirements as stated in the scriptures.
This book is awesome. He goes into tremendous detail about priestly/levitical roles. In many circumstances he shows the order of events, and even the "why" about countless activities.
