I always enjoy the Carl Barks comics but this latest volume, in particular, struck my fancy. The Donald Duck stories generally come in three varieties; the 20+ page adventures, the 10 page stories and the single page gags. I consider the 10 pagers to be the sweet spot and that’s almost all that is presented here. ‘Secret of Hondorica’ is the only long adventure and it’s one of my favorites adventures but the 10 pagers are what I love the most. They generally take place in Duckburg and feature Donald and the boys in some kind of short misadventure. In an era when the Comics Code Authority was just starting to flex its authority and force creators to write black and white characters, Barks was working with an amazingly multidimensional duck. Even as Donald demonstrated some of the worst traits of mankind, such as in ‘Good Canoes and Bad Canoes’ where he continually scolds his nephews for not helping him cheat in a competition, it’s hard not to root for him. Donald isn’t just a ‘bad boy’ he’s an incredibly flawed character but that’s what sets him apart from nearly every other comic character that has ever existed. We love him because unlike the unimpeachable good guy Mickey Mouse we can see something of ourselves in Donald. When Donald tries out to represent Duckburg in the Olympics he publicly humiliates himself repeatedly but he put himself out there and tried his best and was magnificent in his utter failure. We have seen the continuing evolution of Donald’s nephews. When they first appeared they were like three tiny versions of Donald. They were extremely naughty and often cruel to their uncle (who was no saint himself). Now they are the super resourceful Junior Woodchucks that I remember from my childhood. In Chickadee Challenge they are tasked with building an impromptu bridge and demonstrate some incredible intelligence and resourcefulness. The science the boys use to figuring out the width of their ravine they’re planning on spanning is all real and informative as well as the types of bridges. Barks manages to be entertaining and informative which is pretty rare in comics. It’s amazing that Donald managed to raise three such upstanding young ducks given his propensity to cheat in story after story. What I love about Carl Barks comics is that they feel of their era but not dated. His humor doesn’t lose anything after 60+ years. I love the simpler life of mid 50’s with the camping and county fairs and such. This is long before the internet and smart phones and Twitter and Netflix when people would entertain themselves with outdoor activities. A lot of families didn’t even have televisions in the mid 50’s. The plots are very simple. In one story Donald makes a bet with the boys that he can maintain his New Years resolution longer than them, in another he tries to get his nephews to take a bath, in another he attempts to plant a tree in his backyard. The stories are uncomplicated, never overstay their welcome and almost always have a great punchline. This will go down as one of my favorite volumes yet.

Yet another really strong Barks volume. I had thought we would have gotten to Barks' 1958-59 creative burn-out (where the stories got a bit boring for a while) by now, but no. This book has some of the funniest ten-pager stories that I remember vividly from my childhood. The publisher doesn't prominently list the chronological order of the books, so I'll just keep doing this list of VOLUMES PUBLISHED SO FAR:(volumes 1-4 to be published at a later date. The books can, of course, be read in any order. There will eventually be 30 volumes.)5 Donald Duck “Christmas on Bear Mountain”, 1947-486 Donald Duck “The Old Castle’s Secret”, 19487 Donald Duck “Lost in the Andes”, 1948-498 Donald Duck “Trail of the Unicorn”, 1949-509 Donald Duck “The Pixilated Parrot”, 1950-5110 Donald Duck "Terror of the Beagle Boys", 195111 Donald Duck “A Christmas For Shacktown”, 1951-5212 Uncle Scrooge “Only a Poor Old Man”, 1952-5413 Donald Duck “Trick or Treat”, 1952-5314 Uncle Scrooge “The Seven Cities of Gold”, 1954-5615 Donald Duck "The Ghost Sheriff of Last Gasp", 1954-5516 Uncle Scrooge "The Lost Crown Of Genghis Khan" 1956-6117 Donald Duck "The Secret of Hondorica", 1955-56?? Donald Duck "The Lost Peg Mine", TO BE PUBLISHED APRIL 2018

"Will, did Walt Disney's Donald Duck "The Secret of Hondorica" meet your expectations?"Uh, you bet your ass it did. Great addition to probably the greatest publishing project in the history of the world, possibly second only to the Good Book.Buy it, you'll love it, then buy all the others. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED AND I CANNOT THINK OF A BETTER USE OF YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY.

Sorry about the previous review. My mistake.A check with Michael Barrier's "Carl Barks and the Art of the Comic Book"reveals no more Barks WDC&S covers until March 1957 (#198). Onceagain, I'm sorry. Give the book 5 Stars.

my kids are big fans and keep asking when the next one is published.... a hit for birhtdays, christmas, anytime!

If you are a Walt Disney, Donald Duck fan you will like this collection of stories by Carl Barks, who wrote these stories while Walt Disney was alive. These are a collection of stories which were originally in comic books.

Carl Barks is the king of Disney ducks and the production values of this entire series is the best!

This is my 2nd from the series. The lead story, Hondorica, is cute but it's a little too dated (or offensive, depending on your sensibilities) talking about the local savages of Hondrica.
